Television is not receiving infrared signal from remote
instead of blaming the tv set, why dont you try to see the infrared emited from the remote control. maybe it's not emiting normally. usually the problem come from the remote control, not the tv set.

The television has stopped responding
Hello SKrokau:
Have the IR sensor (Infared Sensor) replaced in this model. It is a common failue for Sylvania televisions. The IR sensor is the device used to receive commands from the remote and relay the commands to the microprocessor for processing. The sensor is very inexpensive and the total to repair should not cost you more then (FYI) $80.00 for parts and labor.
Have a Happy Holiday!

Tv stuck in service mode
Unplug for several hours, press and hold power button for 5 seconds, wait half hour more, plug back in and try. Or press and hold either channel buttons at same time or volume buttons at the same time to see if that exits the mode.

Needs vertical height adjustment
Is the picture stretched or shrinking and is it distorted or have lines? There are no vertical Height adjustment the circuit is prest and there is likely a problem in the vertical o/p circuit.
The problem is a bad Vertical Output IC (usually mounted on an aluminum heat sink with the part on it labeled LA78?? ) and 1 or 2 bad capacitors. Some times you can even fix the problem by re-soldering the contacts of the IC- To find the IC follow the 4 wires that come from the Yoke (which is a contained coil of wires slipped over the neck of the picture tube(s)) back to the board. 2 of the wires go to the horizontal o/p and 2 to the Vertical o/p the thinner gauge wires are for the vertical.

Thin bar in the middle of the screen showing the picture
You should get the vertical IC checked starting with checking the supply voltage on it. This is a small flat IC attached to a heat sink with about 9-11 pins. This tv model should carry an LA7837 or an equivalent IC. If supply is present, check with means of a magnifying glass for dry solder joints on it. Resolder the pins on this IC if necessary and should work out fine. Model tends to suffer from this problem.

Please Help!!!
newer model televisions usually have a combination of buttons you can press on the front to reset them to the factory defaults. contact the most senior person that works in the electronics dept. where you bought the unit, they will usually give you some insight without much, if any hassle.

WHITE LINES
Hi kmb0516.
Depends how old the set is, if it is more than 5 years old, time to tell it goodbye, if it is less, might be worth fixing.
I believe the problem is in the vertical output section, it sounds like the picture has shrunk.
Hope this helps, Greg.
