27" MAGNAVOX W/ CHILD LOCK ON- NO REMOTE!

I have a 27" magnavox tv and the original remote is broken. Recently hit child lock on mistake through the tv buttons. Now cannot turn TV on. Tried to buy a universal remote but unable to get TV to respond. I have tried it on other TV's in the house with the power off and had no problems. Also opened up the tv to see if there was a reset switch inside but again no such luck. Is there any way to remove child lock so I'm able to use my tv again? Not much help out there for this problem. Any suggestions would be helpful!

Horizontal line in the middle of the television

I have a Magnavox 27 inch television set with just a horizontal line in the middle when turned on. The sound and even the channel changer works. I would like to know if this is a costly repair, or is there something that I could do to fix this?

From your description of the problem, there seems to be a Cold solder in the Vertical Oscillator or Deflection Coil circuits.
If you know Solid State electronics, and are good with a soldering Iron, sure u can do this yourself.
U gotta trace the Vertical section components and locate the cold solder. In most cases it will be a loose connector from the Deflection coil to the main PCB.Also check for the soldering of the Vertical output IC.

Calm down Calm down. The problem is quite simple. You need to change one maybe two capacitors. Upon removing back cover. Look to the left, after removing foil tape, remove screws and flipover the board. The first cap to go down may have abulge on top or black tar oozing out the top. It is a 25volt 2200mf cap gone bad. Replace it. Second, sometimes and just sometimes next to thatone is 35volt 1200mf cap goes bad......remember just sometimes. You may have to replace it as well.

SYMPTOM:
Clicks and turns off after turning on set when cold. Have to turn on and off several times to work, or keep changing channels, right side of screen is black for a while.
PROBLEM: It is almost always a bad transistor and a bad capacitor. (about $0.70 in parts)
SOLUTION:
This repair is fairly straightforward. You will need a soldering iron, a solder ******, and a small torx bit. Unplug the set. Lay the TV on the floor, screen down. Remove the torx screws holding the rear cover on. There should be 10, (don’t forget the 2 by the input panel). You will see 2 circuit boards, the one of interest is the large one near the bottom of the set. This board has a retainer clip on each side that needs to be pulled out to allow the circuit board to slide out. Slide the board out about 5-6 inches. You might need to support the board so it doesn’t slide back down into the TV set. This circuit board should have numbers by each of the components. You want to look for 7461 (transistor) and 2455 (capacitor). They are located right next to each other near the center of the board. The transistor will usually overheat and discolor the circuit board immediately around it. Warm up the soldering iron and get the solder ****** ready. Heat up the solder joint while removing excess solder with the ******. Once the transistor and capacitor are free, check the numbers on each. The capacitor (round cylinder) should have “47uf” on it. The transistor should have “C33725” on it. You can order these parts from Digi-Key (google it) for about $2.50 including shipping if you use USPS option. The part numbers are: 493-1060-ND for the capacitor and BC33725-ND for the transistor. Once you get your parts, solder them in and check TV operation. It should work as it did before. This repair can be done by anyone familiar with a soldering iron in about 30-45 minutes their first time. Good Luck!!

Magnavox TV won't turn on

We were watching TV (it hadn't even been on for an hour) and it suddenly lost power. We unplugged it for several minutes and tried to turn it on again, but it still is not working. We also tried cleaning all the air vents and plugging it into another outlet. Any suggestions? Please help!

There is a capacitor on the main board the goes leaky and will prevent the tv from turning on. If you know how, you can check the caps near the flyback transformer and find the leaky cap if you are not a tech and don't have a ESR meter it is beter to have a trusted tech to do the repair. Depending on the shop cost should be around $79-$89 depending on if you take it in or have them do a home call.

where do you get capacitors for TV?

There are a number of online vendors for parts. I use MCM Electronics (www.mcminone.com) and Digi-Key (www.digikey.com) as well as a few mail-order houses. Radio Shack still carries a few capacitors, but likely won't have the values you'll need for TV work. You can also search for repair forums where you might find information for specific models of TV about the parts you need and sources.

When replacing caps, it's a good idea to go up to the next higher voltage rating and keep the capacitance the same. The part will be slightly larger but usually will still fit on the board. Under-rating is what usually causes these to fail in the first place, but manufacturers do it to save a few cents.

The TV probably needs to be degaussed. Some places sell a degaussing tool or some devices have a built-in degausser. Non-magnetically shielded speakers sitting on or around the TV can cause this. Such as basic CD Stereo speakers.
