Did you try backing down the contrast?...about the only thing I can think of would be issues with the main board if its not an adjustment in the picture settings in menu

I'm not sure which TV you have. The Philips 50' plasma does not have a backlight. The Polaroid 32 can have a incandescent or a florescent backlight. The backlight is accessed by removing the back of the TV and replacing the lamps. There can be 1-4 of these light for florescent and 1-*** number of lights if incandescent, depends on the design, model, features, price point.

Philips sets use a four digit code to control the v-chip. The override code for Philip sets is 0711, although it may say "Incorrect code" the first time to trick you. If "Incorrect code" is displayed, simply enter 0711 again. To use it hit the MENU key to get to the menus. Go up or down until you reach AUTOLOCK or SMARTLOCK, depending on the model, and push the "right arrow" key on the remote. Enter the override code, and enter it a second time if it says it is incorrect.
Once in the AUTOLOCK or SMARTLOCK menu, go to BLOCK, and push the "right arrow" key. Go to BLOCKING OPTIONS and press the "right arrow" key. Go to MASTER DISABLE and press the "right arrow" key so that it says "MASTER DISABLE ON". The v-chip is now reset

Normally the parts for this unit is a kit Y-SUSTAINBOARD and Z-SUSTAIN BOARD, this is what most manufacturers would want you to do, purchase them. But go to insert and go through all the voltage checks to find the bad part, here is also a chart that should help a lot

Check it again, when you have audio(sound) shine a flashlight on the screen (very close)  Look carefully for a video image. I am happy to help, we need to check the backlight inverter.

1. Turn tv on and get to a point that you have audio.
2. Take a flashlight and shine it on the screen.
3. Look very closely at the screen for a very dark video image.
