could be but this is not a extremely expensive set, Sometimes the tuner if bad has bad solder connections on the board INSIDE the tuner, most that do will react to being banged on with set on and signal hooked up, a replacement tuner if available would be rather costly, doe the set have audio/video input jacks on it?

There are actually two adjustment access holes (focus and contrast) on the back of that model. Here is a makeshift map... On the back of the set mentally divide it to a left and right half. About the middle of the right half and around 4 or 5 inches up from the bench there will be two 1/8" holes. one on top of the other and about 2" apart. Slip a "pocket" sized flat head screwdriver into the lower hole and feel for the blade to enter the slot and gently turn either direction to adjust the contrast to your liking. The other hole above the "contrast" hole is for "focus" and really should be left alone.The entire back cover can be removed by taking the four screws out of the corners and slipping it off. Then you can actually see the adjustment controls if you find getting that little screwdriver into the hole would be easier with it's clothes off...*he smiles...*

Check the degaussing posistor. Replace it with a new on of same type. There are so many types of this component. Might look like these.

I looked at the same chassis I have and the resistor has color bands green blue silver gold wich is a .56 ohm 5% 1/2 watt resistor

it sounds to me that there is a bad capacitor or perhaps a cold solder joint somewhere in the power section of your tv. not sure how much repair would cost, but i will say it's about $50 to have an service tech come out and lok at it.

A Phillips universal remote will work. Just program it for the TV Model. These are about $15 at Radio Shack.

You don't. A good "universal remote" available from Radio Shack (Phillips) for about $15 will provide access to all TV adjustments. Easy to program for all TV models, VCR's, DVD players, etc. About $35 + S&H for the Sharp remote replacement.

I am assuming that this is a conventional CRT type TV. Most if not all TVs of this design has a small squarish PCB right at the very rear of the tube encased in a shielding of some sort. There would be three (3) transistors in said PCB responsible for driving the 3 color guns of the TV (red, blue & green). In some instances, it could just be a single power IC. Either the transistor or the IC would be heatsinked. The transistor for the red color is defective and would require replacement (if IC then the whole IC). In some instances, it could only just be a cold solder.

This of course would require a fair familiarity of electronic components/circuitry and safety procedures, use of a DVM and a soldering iron. It would be to your added advantage access to a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings. Should you be uncomfortable performing a DIY (do-it-yourself), perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

If your cable converter box has audio/video connections on the back of it,you don't need to worry about using that RF coax connector. Just hook it up the same way your DVD is hooked to the TV input jack. Get a 3-wire cable (yellow-red-white)hook it to the same colors on the back of the cable box and hook the other end to an unused input on the back of the TV. Then select that input with your remote and watch TV.

1) Solder any / all bad connections

2)troubleshoot,locate and replace any bad parts in pincushion
circuit....start with pin amp output.......

3)No problem found ?.........could be bad yoke.................T.

this is a common problem as I have stated in many of post here before with inexspensive TV sets. Whats happing here is a "singing" coil. it could be a small coil on the pc board or could even be the flyback transformer or maybe even the switching power supply transformer or could as well be a choke coil in the power supply. Not much a consumer can do really at this poit as there are no serviceable parts inside of this set BUT I think what your doing with heavy book is a really cool thing as whats its doing is flexing the printed curcuit board so your problem in this case i would think would be a small coil on the PCB. But as I said not much you should do about it unless your a quilified technician Sorry to say man but if it really gets to be an anoyence then I would take it to your local repair shop for an estimate(but you know problems like this dont show up at the repair shop when you take them in!) It shouldnt be a big deal unless it turns out that thye flyback transformers the problem!!! Good Luck

Not all televisions have Firmware Updates. They are only updated for a specific problem or to add a feature to a new set. Firmware tells the unit what to do, and what to allow before the software loads. Software Upgrades are more likely and are not fraught with the dangers of firmware which if fail, usually means buying a new motherboard. For software, you just try again.
