Hello,

Here is what you need to know about hard drives.......

Some times you don't know if your hard drive is working or not. Your external hard disk might drop on the ground, or your desktop/laptop hard drive might not be booting. Which ever the case maybe, here is how to find out the condition of your hard disk:

Put your ear close to your hard disk, if you hear your hard disk make a crackling noise, be prepared to buy another hard disk because such hard disk is damaged and cannot be fixed. Also note that it is difficult to recover files from such hard drive.

But if you don't hear a crackling sound, use your hand(s) to feel the drive, if it vibrates, it means the hard disk is in good condition.

What damages external hard drive most times is if you don't eject (safely remove) it from your computer, when it drops on the ground or hits any hard object etc

If your external hard disk stops working, firstly, check if the hard disk inside the case is in good condition by checking for crackling sounds and vibration. Once you observe that the hard disk is in good condition, this means the hard drive case is defective/the cause of the problem. Get another drive case and your drive will work again without loosing any file/data on it.

For desktop/laptop hard drive maintenance, make sure you always shut down your computer properly, don't remove the CPU's power cord while the computer is turned on. To be on a safer side, always use UPS (uninterrupted power supply) for your desktop computer.

Also, when using your laptop, makes sure its fixed at a position. Avoid any shake as the hard disk might shift from its normal position in the process.

I hope this is helpful..........

Good luck.

I bought the samsung g3

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use asoftech data recovery program to recover your files.http://www.asoftech.com/adr/I used this file recovery program before, quite easy to use and works well for me.

External drive not picked up on computer

External hard drives not only provide additional storage space on a computer system but also allow data to be conveniently transported from one computer to another.

These drives typically plug right in to a port on the computer and function without any additional setup; however, if you are running into trouble where your external hard drive is not being detected, you must troubleshoot the situation to determine why the drive appears to be missing.

Check the USB connection running from the hard drive to your computer.

If the USB cable is not seated securely in the port, the computer will not detect the external drive.

Disconnect the USB cable from the computer and plug it into a different USB port. Occasionally, a USB port will fail to function with some hardware and changing the USB connection may correct this issue.

Switch from a USB to a Firewire cable connection, if possible.

The USB port on the hard drive may have died; if so, changing to a Firewire connection will resolve this issue.

Install the driver for the external device from the installation disc provided with the product. Older computer systems may require you to manually install this driver.

After inserting the installation CD, follow the prompts from the installation wizard to install the driver on your computer.

Restart the computer.

If you connected the external drive while the computer is powered down, it may not recognize the device when you turn on the computer.

After restarting the computer, connect the external drive to the system.

The drive should now be detected by your operating system.

Connect the external hard drive to a power source and then plug it into your PC computer using a USB or Firewire cable.

Log on to your PC computer using an account with administrative privileges.

Open the Start menu and click on the "Control Panel" icon.

Open the "Administrative Tools" folder and then double-click on the "Computer Management" icon.

Select "Disk Management" from the list of options on left side of the window.

Right-click on the drive you want your computer to recognize and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths."

Select a drive letter for the external hard drive to be recognized as and click "OK."

The drive will now appear in My Computer.

Hope this helps.

Good Day Daniellevion!

Have you seen a hard disk inside your computer? That is exactly what is inside in an external drive.

You mentioned that you dropped the external drive once, and that could be the reason why your computer was unable to recognized it as external drive.

Danielle! The connectors of the hard disk inside the Samsung External Drive (or other term is hard disk enclosure) might be loosened.

If you can open the enclosure and expose the two connectors, disconnect them and reseat properly.

That might fix it!

My samsung G3 1.5TB external powered hard drive

tryright clicking on my computer and selecting map network drive.(You'll get thesame results by right clicking on network neighborhood icon on your desktop andselecting map network drive.)This is the method many people use to assign adrive name (i.e.,letter) to a drive.
How about asking you to format it before you can use it?Then you can recover datafrom hard drive withdata recovery software like Tenorshare DataRecovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look forlost data.

My 2TB g3 station doesnt wanna work on my mac os x

You problem is most likely because the hard disk is formatted using NTFS which can be read on MAC OS but does not allow writing data on it. Solution is to backup your data somewhere and give it a clean format.
Click on the spotlight icon (the magnifying glass) in the upper right corner of your screen, and typing "disk utility."

Once in disk utility, select your external drive in the list on the left of the Disk Utility window, and click "erase". Select FAT32 as your file format, name the volume, and click the "erase" option.

REMEMBER TO BACKUP YOUR DATA as everything will be wiped out during a format!

Assuming you don't hear any activity it might be the power supply that has died. Check if it's under any warrant.. if not you can always rescue the hard drive by taking it out of the enclosure and plugging it into your PC. Odds are it's a SATA drive. Either way.. taking it out of the enclosure will rule out of it's the hard drive or the components. Good luck.

Is it possible to repair

The adapter board is a common fault, I have had about 20 of these cases in the last year, and It has made me hate external hard drives. My advice, take the hard drive out, its easy enough, remove the top two rubber feet, take out the screws, pry the top open, gently lift out and take the screw out of the adapter board. Now get an external reader. I've just got a cheapo for $50 and it works great for me (http://www.chinavasion.com/product_info.php/pName/premium-dual-sata-hard-drive-docking-station/) but if you want to pay more for something more reliable, I can't blame you. Keep the area reasonably dust free and hard drives you're not using in zip lock bags and you shall have much less drama, trust me.
