I am using someone elses

3 options:
1 - Uninstall the OEM software that came with the drive and install another media player (GOM player is great, though it has a few problems handlig DVD menus, but plays movies like a dream)
2 - Check if there is a form in the LiteOn box that you can send to the manufacturer to get the registration via mail
3 - Or just get a refund, because there is no law in any country stating that you must have an internet connection. If they sell the software in a package with the drive, unless it is clearly stating on the OUTSIDE of the box that it is a DEMO, they should provide you support.

now... a more versatile solution is an internal blue ray writer drive with an enclosure.. enclosures are used for people that want to get get an internal item and convert them to external/portable devices. and enclosure is about 30 bucks and that way you can just buy internal devices and put them inside the enclusure and transform a blue ray disk burner into an external hard drive by just swaping in and out internal components from and out your enclosure.

I bought the liteon 20x

Your only solution would be to do an internet search for open source dvd authoring software. If you just want to copy and burn dvd's there is a lot of open source software, you just have to try them out to see what fits your needs. Open source is free.

Wanting to install cd\dvd burner

Adding a cd/dvd to a desktop is a simple job.
If you purchase a CD/DVD burner, make sure it includes the burning software.
If you get a read only, you don't need any software.

Open the case, put the cd/dvd in, attach the IDE cable, attach the power cable (all of this should be in the case already).
Power the computer on, go into the BIO screen (depending on the computer, you have to hit either F1 or F2 or F12, or DEL or Insert (it really depends on the motherboard, what key you use).
Tell it to auto find the CD, Save and Exit. That's it!
If you get a burner, the steps before are the same, you just have to install the software after it boot up.

I have your cd player

if you know the name of the program, and where it may possibly be eg C:/program files. search that location for the folder. failing that click on start, then on search. select all files and folders, then type in the name or part of name of the program you are looking for. the system will start a search, which may take some time. when it finds files and folders with the name or part name, they will come up in a seperate window, when you see what you want, right click on it and select 'open containing folder' when that folder opens and you see the icon you are looking for right click on it and select 'send to desktop - create shortcut. thats it
good luck

Not reading disc.cd/dvds

Solution 1.
-----------
Firstly lets see if your drive is working!

Put in a disk you know works and has files of some sort on it

If nothing is still happening , goto my computer and right click on your CD drive and

click "explore"
Do you now see files ?

If not right click on "My computer" and click manage

The "Computer Management" Console will now popup and you will see a selection of

headings on the left , click the plus (+) sign on "Storage" to expand it then click on

"Disk management (Local)

In here you will see all the storage devices attched to your computer , including your

Hard Drives , Floppy Drives , USB Flash Drives etc.. , from here you should see your CD

Drive , if you do and right click it and explore the drive and you do see files ,

change the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive from the default D: to say like F: or

something , right click the CD-Drive in the Disk management and click change driver

letter , and follow the instructions.

If you dont see the files or you dont see the CD-Drive at all do the following:

1. right click my computer
2. click on properties
3. a new window will popup
4. click on the hardware tab
5. click on device manager

the device manager console will now open ,
from within here find your CD/DVD Drive under the DVD/CDROM drive heading,

right click the appropriate drive and click on uninstall.

Now reboot your computer and then windows should detect your CD /ROM Drive and reinstall it , you may now again need to reboot in order for your CD Drive to function correctly If this doesn't fix your problem try upgrading the firmware of your Drive.

**im assuming your running Windows XP for that solution but i would think the process in Vista would be very similar.

If you have a spare computer that is unused maybe you could try it on that machine and see if it works , if it does a fresh installation of Windows on your current machine may be the solution as it could be infected with a virus which just may have corrupted the window drivers.

Solution 2.
------------
If the DVD Drive is connected on the same ribbon cable as the Harddrive , the Hard Drive should be set to Master on the Jumper settings and the DVD Drive set To Slave otherwise if it's on a seperate cable it should be connected at the end of the cable and set to master. If you do / have done this can you see the devices in BIOS ?

Solution 3.
------------

It sounds like some dust or hair has landed on the Laser Lens (The component responsible for reading the data on the CD) and is interfering with the playback , to clean this your self you will need a laser lens cleaning kit to safely remove the debris. If you're finding that after cleaning the disk the DVD is still skipping try cleaning the cd , as debris on the CD itself can also cause interference for the laser lens

try this site if you need to find the driver. itll ask you for the type of product and the model number, and probably the operating system.
