We have a RCA D52W23

projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

I bought my tv last

I had a similar problem with my 42 in Philips LCD HDTV. Here was the problem. My Power Supply Board had several bad capacitors. I opened my TV (warranty was expired ofcourse) and found four bulged capacitors on the PSB. Many major electronics companiesPhilips/Magnavox, Sony, Panasonic, and others were sold capacitors that failedin 2-5 years instead of 10-20. Thecapacitors fail prematurely due to a lack of preservatives. Unfortunately, they were installed in allsorts of devices and cause a wide range of failure problems. Here are some options for you. 1. Have it fixed by a professional $$$$$$$??????? (Is itunder warranty?) Remember, TVs CONTAINHIGH VOLTAGE AND CAN KILL YOU! Do this at your own risk. 2. Open your TV and find PSB. (The board that the power cordplugs into) Check for faulty caps. If you find some (bulged or leaking) bad capsreplace the entire board. The entireboard costs around $250 right now because they are in high demand right now. They can be found at tv-part.com but supplies are limited. I would definitely shop around though. 3. Remove and then replace individual faulty caps. This takes some soldering skill. Caps are inexpensive and if you can take care of it yourselfit will save you hundreds. This may be your problem. If you determine that it might be. I have a Tip/How TO tutorialon this site that may also help. Itgives step by step instructions for replacing caps on PSB #715t2432-2. If this isyour board you are in luck. Here is theLink: Fixingthe Philips Turns/shuts off on its own problem. I'm working on uploading pictures to helpguide people though the process as well. Let me know if I can do anything to help. Hope this helps and if it does please rate itaccordingly. Good luck.Kaufman605

Very blurry at top and bottom.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop

When the TV was turned on there was a hissing

The board you were referring to is the power board - the one that converts the mains AC voltage to the several DC ones needed by the other components. What you have is a massive failure, the power board is completely destroyed. Yes failures of the power sources are pretty common - it's what usually kills a tv - but i must say that i rarely heard of such a massive failure.
What most likely happened: a capacitor has started to age and lose its insulating attributes; this has caused a much greater than usual current to flow thru it straight to the ground; because of that the protection system of the tv was detecting it as a short and shutting down the tv to save it; unfortunately you ignored the warning signs so the capacitor aged even further till if finally failed completely: it exploded and caught fire, the metal strips inside it completely shorting the power source.
As i said the damage is extensive - at least the power board will have to be completely replaced. Surely other components have been damaged when all of this happened. There's nothing more you can do, fixing it now requires a great experience so unplug the tv from the wall and call a repairman.

The bottom half on the RCA D52W19 has been removed

this is the flyback. it is not uncommon for this part to be bad and spark. Now it is common if this part is bad then the horizontal output transistor is shorted. this part is located directly in front of the flyback on a large heatsink.

My RCA D52W14 wont turn on it makes a weird noise

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. On the Deflection board there are 3 capacitors CP 114, 120 and 150. 3 blinks occur if any of them is puffed up on top. To resolve this issue you'll have to replace all the 3 capacitors CP150 2200UF 16, other 2 are 220UF 35v they will be green with gold writing on them. Also re solder all pins on Fly Back Transformer (FBT). Please do rate the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks

Colors won't converge. automaticaly, or

guns1frc,

You most likely have bad convergence ICs. They are not too difficult to replace if you have good soldering skills and are methodical and careful. The ICs run very hard and over time dry out the heat sink compound causing them to fail. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4220499-change_projection_tv_convergence_ics which will walk you through the process as well as tell you where to get the parts you need at the best price.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.
