Hi, in most of these RCA TV, we found a common problem with that strange sound. You need electronics skills to solve this problem. The sound coming from the TV ( back cover), caused by a faulty transformer T14401 location number, part number 241319, also a transistor horizontal output is shorted need be replaced. location Q14401 part number, part number 237470. You are describing normal operation. I have a Samsung with the 4:3 screen aspect ratio and deal with the same issues. With a program that is broadcast as HD I have the "letter box" pic. since this is needed to amintain the 16:9 ratio it is formatted in. Some programs come up as only filling part of the screen & at times I find the zoom mode less objectional to view. Even if you have a wide screen set you still deal with programs that are not in the 16:9 format. Perhaps eventually all programming will be in a consistent format, but for now we just have to put up with it. The good news is that your TV is not defective.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but the problem you've described can't be fixed with troubleshooting. Your TV will have to be repaired. There is a part that has developed a defect and needs to be replaced. If not a part the unit will need a firmware upgrade. If you're still in warranty, the TV will be repaired at no charge to you. The warranty would likely be at least one year from the date of purchase from the manufacturer. If you purchased an extended service plan they will repair the TV at no charge as well.

If the TV is no longer in warranty, it will likely cost a minimum of $150 parts and labor. This is assuming that you only need one circuit board or small part. If the problem is more than one of the circuit boards, the price of repair could go much higher. A firmware upgrade shouldn't be more than $200 unless the manufacturer charges a lot for the software.

Before paying a TV repair person $75+ to diagnose the problem, ask yourself if you're willing to pay $150 minimum to fix this particular set. Also keep in mind that most TVs that old have a very limited number of replacement parts still available. Normally it will cost at least $75 to have the set looked at by a repair shop (diagnostics). If the part needed to complete the repair isn't available, you won't get that money back.

ahhh the noise maker comes to life again .. Ok my friend this is a common problem with this set If your lucky?? If you know anything about trouble shooting tvs then this is what ya got.. Try first to measure the Horizontal output transistor. It will meaqsure a few ohms between the base and emmitter. But the base and collector should measure about 450 to 550 olms on the diode settings onm the metter.if it measures shorted you need to replace the flyback tranformer along with the Horz output transistor. Now if the HOT( thats horiz output transistor)is not shorted then theres a little coil in the horizontal drive thats causing problems as you need to take out the coil from the PCB and scrape off the ends and reinstalkl it. also the horizontal driver tranformer as well as the resistor that feeds the transformer could be bad and thast is a 3200 ohm at three watts. if ya dont have a clue what I just said the sets gonna cost ya ariynd 200 to 300 to fix .. the lightining battery is not working very well. You should exchange it, so the TV power could get to the Tv and let it Work.
