Use the Samsung Firmware Updater to fix it. Mine did what all of you are speaking about. I was ready to toss it then I tried the firmware updater on the CD and it fixed it. You must copy all the files from the \setup\Programs\ and \setup\Binary\ folders on the Samsung CD to a folder on your hard drive. Then connect the player via USB and run stupdaterapp.exe. It will search for the device and
pop up a menu. Check the Format
Data Are box and click start. It takes a few minutes and wipes the device clean but it fixed mine.
Samsung will not start
There is a specific reset method - it is probably holding the power button in for 10 seconds - which caused your player to start working after the 10th try. Do a full reset. If the problem still persists, double check the Samsung website for a firmware upgrade, b/c it sounds like your DB is corrupt.

Samsung YP-T5 MP3 Player I/O error
I had the same problem and solved it with this:
On the Samsung support page, thereĀ“s a knowledge base called "YP-T6 Or YP-MT6 Show No File And Zero Free Memory"
you need to download the latest firmare from the downloads section, then with the uptader on the PC, remove the battery from the YP-T5 or 6 and connect the USB cable to a PC while pressing and holding the play button on the YP-T. It should connect in a recovery mode which allows you to update the firmware, format the flash drive and get going again !

Serial Number
The serial # should be etched onto the player itself - you may have to remove the battery case if it's not directly on the back of the player. The serial # would not be on the manual or paperwork.
