I was using an hdmi cable purchased online. A friend told me that it might be the 'cheap' hdmi cable. I tried a set of Monster hdmi cables and problem solved. So all hdmi cables are not the same.

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

OK, you sound pretty competent, so I have gotten you a plethora of service and repair manuals, & tutorials and self help web site, Please use these to troubleshoot, and hopefully remedy your problems. I am sure if you read through these manuals you will prevail, these manuals are what I use to train the engineers to service and repair these sets. I have also included a Color wheel replacement website in case you have to repair that.
Whenever a TV "hic-ups" usually something has failed that makes it so the Power Supply has to shut down to avoid a catastrophic failure, and possibly a fire, an explosion or both. You FIRST must test the Power Supply, before anything else, as if the PSU, isn't OK, then nothing else can be... Good Luck.
So, if you feel it is beyond you, or you simply do not wish to proceed, then, it is nearly always my professional opinion that one should always get a "Quote" from the manufacturers recommended service center, Samsung, in your case, please contact a local or head office and ask for a referral to an Authorised service center. I cannot stress how important that last point is. It is even worth the cost of shipping. You see an authorised service agent, will have trained staff, trained on their brand, also they have first hand access to parts, original parts. This will actually save you money and ensure you can actually get it back fixed. Of course asking for a "Quote" also gives on the option of repair or replace. Often my clients,do not go through with repair, unless it is moderate, but in some of the more costly jobs they see it, as do i, that a replacement, with a warranty, is a better option. As an aside here, one could then tear the TV down, and sell the Known Good bits. You'd be surprised who needs parts, i myself often must by from third party sources to effect a repair. So money could be recouped, somewhat, and help out someone else.

Last week , my 6-7

Sounds like the old lamp blew and took out the ballast. I believe that you need a new ballast for your unit. The other possiblity would be a problem in the low voltage power supply but if the indicator lights are blinking the most likely problem is the ballast.

I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4977572-when_change_ballast_in_dlp_tv which explains the problem, how to repair it and where to get the parts. If you need more help let me know.

Thanks for using FixYa and the generous rating.

Hi, my tv keeps turning

There could be a few different things causing this. It could a bad ballast that powers the light and wheel. It may be a bad main circuit board or dmd board which both commonly go bad in these Samsung HLN series tv's. It is very common!!!!! Look at the boards to see if there are any burn marks or swollen capacitors on the boards. If needed, use a voltmeter and test the flyback for power. Those are the main causes of this in this tv.

My tv turns off by itself. it doesn't reset just

As someone else suggested to you the color wheel if original is the most likely reason for this.

This has a small electric motor and spins at about 14,000 rpm. A typical failure of this part will be a high pitched sound or a fan like noise---the wheel faces the lamp and is close enough to the ballast for the sound to be difficult to pinpoint.

Problems where a set shuts down after some period of time can be hard to isolate but the description suggests it is the color wheel------it is plugged and connected to the sets light engine which will instantly detect if it slows down below a certain speed or even stops.

If the picture looks normal when it is on and the lamp is known to be good BUT hear the whine or fan like noise the color wheel is suspect.

I can look and get you a part number and cost etc and You Tube has actual video instructions for replacing them in most of the Samsung sets.

Let me know if you have questions--I am here to help and have changed a lot of these color wheels in this type and brand of set.

I Have a problem With An Samsung DLP 50" Model-

I don't have a lot to go by here sir or maam. Whenever I encounter no color on a television I check the settings first to make sure there is no monochrome (black and white) feature that can be disabled. Second is that is the case I check all of my inputs to see if there is no color on all of them. This televison has 13 of them!
Next if the problem is just on one input then I check the cables and either reseat or change them. If it is not the cables I try connecting another device to the televison.

If all 13 inputs are experiencing the same problem and monochrome is disabled if this tv has this setting then the tv needs to be serviced.

Once again I do not have a lot of information to go by but partstore.com has a color wheel for this television in stock for $103.95
If you are in the United States that is. If you're in Canada it is $139.60. If you aren't in either of these I would need to know that to be able to locate the part for you. I could also locate you a service provider to complete the labor if I knew your zip code or postal code if you weren't completing the labor yourself.

If all else fails you can call Samsung's support at 1-800-726-7864 to find a local service provider to complete the labor.

When providing tech support details are key so I apologize if this isn't helpful but all I could do is work with the details I had to go by.

Pitcher is dark and distorted like its pulling to

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com
