Could be a bad/failing fan. Is the fan still vibrating? Is it making more noise then normal? Most of the time i find that a fan going bad and vibrating raises heck with the rest of the optics in the TV.

I have a benq projector which has a very noisy color wheel can I stop it or how do I replace it

You don't mention if you get a picture or not but you might want to check the lamp for signs of damage. I think you will want to check samsung's website samsung.com/support and type in your model, some of these model are experiencing similar problems and there might be a firmware update for this.

Remove and inspect the lamp to see if it shattered inside?

If using a cable or sat box try a DVD etc when set cold, a box can cause lockup issues via signal.Not a color wheel is correct, more likely a DMD which is rather pricy and almost as much as the entire light engine which comes with it.

Likely the DMD unit which is part of the light engine--if have to unplug set the microprocessor is getting scrambled and cannot operate. Common and fatal issue as to replace the light engine the cost will exceed the value of this set---DMD can be purchased alone but costs almost as much as the whole engine that comes with it.Seen several of these sets---a shame but even at wholesale the part to fix it makes it not worth fixing.

have a expert examine the set to make sure there is no safety issue here and if not the set may have got some plastic so hot that is what you are smelling.
