My remote control no longer
There are a handful of reasons why a remote control will stop functioning. Some are quite simple to correct, while others may not be economical to fix at all and will require you to replace the remote entirely. Here are a few of the most common causes and some corrective actions you can take:
First of all, it may simply be a dead batteries. Try replacing the batteries with a new set and try the remote again.
This may also just be a case of a bad electrical connection between the batteries and the contacts in the remote control. Remove the batteries and check the ends of the batteries and the battery contact terminals in the remote for any kind of rust, oxidation, or residue buildup. Clean the contacts thoroughly with the the flat edge of a screwdriver to removes any oxidation deposits and make the electrical contacts shiny again. Discard any batteries that show signs of oxidation deposits or leakage.
After a battery replacement, the remote may also need to be reprogrammed with the code for your TV. Look in the user's manual for your TV, or in the booklet for the remote if it was an aftermarket universal remote, and find the code number for your brand of TV and the programming instructions.
If the above procedures do not correct the problem, then you may have a hardware fault in the remote or possibly in the remote control receiver circuit in your TV. Find a second universal remote control, program it to your TV, and test to see if your TV is able to respond to that remote's signal. If it does, then the problem lies with your original remote.
A remote control with a hardware fault is unlikely to be economically repairable. You are probably better off just getting a new universal remote control to replace it. These are widely available at any electronics store or even online and can range in price from $15 to $200 depending on the quality andspecial features you require.
