This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

• Screen looks 3D
• Colors don't line up
• One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
• Screen is bowed or warped.
• TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Connect a Cable or Satellite box to one of the inputs and bypass the TV tuner. Or get a Digital Converter box if you only get the local TV stations.

Static happens due to high voltage arc. High voltage arcing is caused by dirt, dust, humidity and when other metal objects are too close to the high voltage area or the line to the projection tubes.You should clean the dust, dirt and wipe down, very carefully, the surfaces near the high voltage arcing areas. Of course, turn the set off and let is sit for a couple of hours to discharge the high voltages for your own safety.

To reset the protection system you will have to unplug the power cord for an hour or so.When it comes back on be very observant where the arcing is taking place. If a component has bee damaged, such as a resistor, you will need to replace it.

simple: remove back cover and locate the three large black lens you will see top and dead center, clean them with either a lens cloth or a paper towel with glass cleaner----they are the light source for your picture and should be cleaned once a year---as they get dusty the picture gets darker and duller looking.\\

Unfortunately your units tuner is the old NTSC system and will not work with the new digital system without a cable box.

There sounds to be a heat problem here. I suggest a cleaning of the system. When you have it apart, using a can of compressed air and/or a shop vac, clean the dust from the system.
When installing replacement bulbs, be certain to NOT touch the lamp with your bare fingers. Always use a clean cloth or tissue. The oils on your fingers can likely cause the lamp to heat up and burn out.

If this doesn't resolve it, then I would consider a repair tech. According to my research, this TV is ready to be retired.
You can get a very nice Flat Screen with High Definition for quite cheap these days. My opinion on the 3D tv's are that they're not quite ready for main stream yet. Get one with either 120 or 240 Hz, as they will provide the best action video. 60Hz will be quirky/jerky, but still better than the picture on your old one.

My 57H81 won't converge, plus I get the "touch focus error" message. I could get manual convergence of blue, but not red. Plus, during touch focus the red would not move horizontally

You are probably experiencing primary stages of a convergence IC failure. This repair is composed of replacing two output IC's and alignment. Standard repair is around $350

You need to replace 2 ICs they are big black ICs and will have part number on them ,example STK392-110. Mats has ICs 1-800-628-1118

I would suspect your power supply deflection board is failing. Normally these tvs have a problem with the hyper board in which the image is scrambled and then clears up. Your problem is just the opposite and indicates a part is heating up on the power board. A good visual look at the board will be your best starting point. Look for burn marks, a capacitor that is rounded on top or leaking. Also look carefully to ensure your CRT bulbs have not leaked fluid onto one of the boards.

This is an indication of out-of-regulation in the power supply section. The very common caused of this fault is the dried-up/leaky electrolytic capacitor in that section. It will drop the supply from normal voltage and will disable the unit and blinking error appear. Sometimes it has a bulged/dome at the top but not all, it is better that you have a capacitor checker/tester to determine its condition. Also, bad solder joints can produce the same symptom, it is hard to spot, you should use table lamp/portable lamp for finding the cold solder. Secondary reason of fault is the open fuse/fusible resistor in series with the output of regulator IC/transistor, shorted/openRegulator IC/transistor, shorted zener diode(all are in the power supply section) and the microcontroller. Best that you check the output voltage of each regulator to determine where the fault came from and narrow the job.

If you don't have necessary tools and test instruments, and can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the problem. Don't attempt to work in the power supply if you don't know the safety precaution of handling it, there some stored electricity enough to hurt you with a little mistake only.

Also check if your unit is under warranty /extended warranty, avail it because the manufacturer of your unit will fix it for free. Don't open the back panel, this will void the warranty.

Your Convergence ICs have failed. It is very common on rear projections. The solution is to replace the STK chips, check fuses and the resistors next to the STK chips. Replace as necessary and re-align via the service menu. It is about a $300 repair at a tv service center. You will need the service manual if you decide to do this yourself.

Try This:
When you notice the symptons Use this simple test to verify.
Go to the users menu on the tv.
Look for the converge option probably under setup or video setting. Converge is short for convergence to align the red and blue colors to the green color.

If you cannot move the red either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for red section.
If you cannot move the blue either horizontal or vertical, then the STK chip has failed for the blue section.

If you can move both in each direction then the problem is something else.


Note if one STK chip fails, you replace both regardless. They will be right next to each other.

The fluid in the CRT bulbs is most likely cloudy. Check the blue to see if fluid is clear. If fluid is clear, then likely your flyback transformer is failing. I assume you already check the brightness and contrast settings on the tv.

For that old of a tv, try Ebay and seach either on the tv model or part numbers. You can also try encompass parts, Big Screen TV parts, or others by using a google search. Most likely you will be buying used parts.
