it sounds like you have the common problem with these models. The poblem has occured so offten that toshiba issued a service bulliteen about it. There is a problem with a cuircit board called the Hypermodule its a signal processing board/ the ideal situation would be replaced this board but it has happen so much it may be difficult to find this ooard so this board can be repaird. The secound problem is to fix this board 11 very very small parts called capacitors need to be replaced. i have also replace these and only someone advance in solder should attempt it very small. twezers and magnifer. You can hire someone but it very labor intensive. Our shop charges 300 just in labor It can be fixed but I would adviise its just no worth it

DOES IT GET BETTER AFTER WARM UP? THE PROBLEM IS GOING TO BE WITH THE "NEXT HYPERUNIT" IT IS THE DIGITAL SCAN CARD FOR THE TV. IT DOES THE HIGH DEFENITION VIDEO AND AUDIO PROCESSING. YOU CAN TRY AND HOOKUP THE TV USIING AN HDTV SIGNAL AND THE PICTURE MAY LOOK BETTER BUT THAT WILL NOT LAST YOU WILL NEED A HYPERUNIT REPAIR.

This TV is CRT driven and when the brightness is a issue you would need to diagnose the Blue CRT and or the Fly back transformer.

Many times the transformer is not providing enough power to that CRT witch can cause this to happen.

Without the TV in front of me it would be difficult to pin point.

Also you would want to consider if the TV is out of Focus thus causing this blue tint, Here is a on line part store that can help you in purchasing the parts for the tv if your interested in Do It Yourself repair.

First if the TV is not illuminating with the brightness function you would consider at this point the TUBE "CRT" or the Fly back witch drives them.

Red/blue/green OFFSET 3D like? The convergence ICs (STKxxxx) are more likely to have gone bad.
They black plastic pack with legs coming out at the bottom with STKxxx stamped on it. Look for that first.

Your description sounds like your unit is in the "DEMO" mode. The procedure to access the demo mode and turn it on or off is in the operaitons manual. If you do not have one you can download one for free at http://www.retrevo.com/support/Toshiba-42H81-TVs-manual/id/311bh747/t/2/ . If you do not care about getting the maual and just want the verbiage to end here is the procedure:

To start the demo mode:

Press and hold the MENU button on the front of the set for 4 seconds.

To stop the demo mode:

Press RECALL, EXIT or Power

The tv have a problems known as a convergence problems,it dead.The tv have colors lines R,G,B mis alignment,have colors shadows pictures or 3D pictures look alike.The tv convergence board have dead 2 STK convergence ICS and some or all it resistors too.These parts on the tv convergence board,must be replaced to solved the tv picture convergence problems.The shop,will cost like $300-350 for parts and labors.

you need to auto focus it, if this doesn't work then you need convergence chips

Try to open the back cover of your tv and check in the power supply section for any busted fuse. Replace it with same equivalent and run it again.

Look at some photos if they show your problem you have a convergence trouble.

Total parts cost if parts purchased on EBAY will be under 30 dollars.

I can step you through the fix but if convergence it means both of the STK-392-110 CHIPS need to be replaced.

The hard part here is getting at them--I can tell you the best way to do this as I have fixed over 1,000 sets with this kind of problem.

Other than the chips there are a few resistors around them that need to be checked--easy and they are cheap parts if needed.

Let me know your skill--I will post photo of the chips and what typical convergence problems look like.

I have bad news for you, the total cost for the three screens you will need will be about $290.00. They can be obtained from http://www.encompass.com . Here are the part #s: Fresnel 23311898 $80.00, Lenticular 23311897 $120.00 and Protector 23311863 $90.00.

Installation is straight forward. Generally you have to remove the back top cover with the mirror attached. Then check under the bezel on the front, below the screen, for several screws. Remove the screen and lay it flat on the floor. Remove the screen hold in screws or clips. Remove the screen.

Assemble the new screens. Make sure they are in the correct order. Protector (on outside), Lenticular in the middle and the Fresnel on the inside. You will need to secure the screens together. Black cloth tape works well around the perimeter. Reinstall the screen into the frame and reassemble the unit. This should complete the job.

This is a parasite signal in the video final board of the green CRT. Open the tv and inspect the connections to the green tube for bad solderings on the ground wires. Then the filtering capacitors on the video final transistors. Finally check the horizontal deflection/high tension module for bad or aged components.

Call local TV Shops see if they have any extra Screens
Look on EBay under Electronics/Parts

There are a few solutions for you out there. you could use a product like this one: COMPOSITE/SVIDEO to HDMI converter

There is also a product like this that will allow you to take a HDMI connection and still have it feed into your computer with the cables you have already plus it will keep it at 720P this way.. You can get it here:converter

Keep in mind these are a bit pricey but there are cheaper solution out there. They will do near the same job for less.Let me know and I can find some better priced solutions(Ebay is great for this BTW)

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.
This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
•Screen looks 3D
•Colors don't line up
•One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
•Screen is bowed or warped.
•TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
