If the power button is broken you are not going to be able to use the DVD player. You will need to get the player either repaired or replace it.

Shouldn't matter what the OS (operating system) is. What you need to do is to make sure you convert the movie to proper format which would allow you to view on DVD player after burning. Avi is a great format but when you burned it to DVD your computer probably created a Data Disk. Which would make it unreadable by DVD player.
