my screen will turn on right after unit is plugged in and stay on for a short period of time, then it shuts off and the red light near the power button blinks and teh tv will not turn back on.

If you are on a satellite system, well they have a recurring problem that cuts the sound off. You may only need to unplug the satellite receiver for 30 seconds. I have seen this happen so many times. Also be sure you have not inadvertly pressed the mute button. And be sure the speakers are on in the sound menu. The worst and last problem is a bad audio circuit failure in the TV.
Unfortunately it has nothing to do with the power plug.
