Hello first you need to have a transcription software program, there is a different transcription software and depends on the one you used, that's the pedal that you will need, or you can buy the complete kit pedal and software any of the following can work for you.

You should always remove the batteries if the unit will not be used for the next 24 hrs.Placing the unit in the hold position merely prevents the unit from doing anything except for keeping it in the mode its in while in the hold position.this is handy to keep it from being accidently turned off or stopped.the recorder maintains data such as time and date through an internal clock.this clock must be powered or you would loose your time and date and other settings.

Hello the way you are trying to do it is more complicated, I recommend sell your unit and upgrade to another unit that transfer audio files fast and will give you more time recording and better record quality for example this model has a software the is really easy to record in to a CD on different audio formats if you want plus you will received a Dragon® NaturallySpeaking® 9 Recorder Edition that you can change audio to text the price is really good check it if you want

As you say there is no on/off button on the unit. The display is on at all times. If you look at the instructions under the heading "3 Set the time", there is a tip that states this. Here's a link to the instructions:

As there is no USB port on this IC Recorder, you can connect the Headphone OUT of the IC Recorder to the LINE IN of the Computer. Then, use any Sound Recorder Software to capture the files. You can also use the Sound Recorder Software preinstalled in the Computer. After transferring the recordings to the Computer, you can use any CD Burning Software to burn the files to a CD.
