Put it on hold. Slide the "Hold" switch up and leave it up. It does work.
Sliding the switch back down takes it off hold and turns it back on.
When off (hold switch on) pressing buttons will display a message that says "HOLD"
That alerts you that it's OFF and not dead.

Look on the case. You'll see a button that slides. It takes it off of HOLD. HOLD mode is good to protect the recordings while the unit gets put in a pocket or purse.

It does turn off necessarily unless you take the batteries out. You'll need to set the date again but it will retain the recordings it had.

Make sure you press erase twice and wait a few seconds for all of the files to pack. The unit fills the holes when a file goes away. You can erase say file 3, then it will pack all the files to put #4 in 3's old place, 5 in 4's old place and so on. Make sure you dont keep erasing the same number file becuase the new #3 file is the old #4.

You need an audio cable with 1/8" connection on each end. Plug intot eh earphone jack on the B7 and then to your audio in of your computer. Use a sound recording program to record it. Its primitive but works fine. AUDACITY is a free program you can use.

If this device is in warrenty, you may not do this. If you do diassemble this B500, then you lose your warrenty. I'm a technician in belgium, so I do know this things.

friendly greetings,

An adapter will not fix the problem. The files cannot be transferred to a computer using a USB port. The files must be transferred analog using the recorder's headphone cord. The files are then recorded to the computer from the Sony recorder using a program such as Windows Recorder. The ICD-B500 has many great features but archiving to a computer is not one of them.
