I dropped my laptop, now when i switch it on, the screen is striped to the point where nothing is legible. What can i do to fix this? Is it worth it?

Posted ahead of myself. There is a flow, or method; that is used, and should be followed,1) Laptop OFF, monitor OFF; connect a VGA monitor to the VGA port, on the Left/middle side of the laptop. {White}(General example of a VGA Cable, and VGA connector, {Port},http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector Scroll down a little for VGA Cable example)You can use a CRT type of monitor, (Looks like a small TV), or a flat screen monitor if it has a VGA cable.2) Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.Turn the laptop on.No display on external VGA monitor? There are at least 3 display options available;A) Internal display of laptop ONLYB) Internal display of laptop AND external VGA monitorC) External VGA monitor ONLYPress, and hold down on the Fn key, and at the same time tap once on the F7 key. (The F7 key is the Display Toggle-Over key)Still no display on external VGA monitor? Hold the Fn key down again, and tap once more on the F7 key.I think the display on the external VGA monitor, will be fine. Could I be wrong? Yes. If the display still has lines going through it; the graphics chipset's mounting to the motherboard, is the problem. Most want to just replace the motherboard. Now you're talking about bucks. $200 + for just the motherboard. There are methods to reflow the graphics chipset's mounting, and re-seat the graphics chipset to motherboard. One professional, and a Bunch of amateur methods. If you find this to be the problem, post back in a Comment, and we'll deal with it.Good display on external VGA monitor, means the graphics chipset mounting is not the problem; the problem is the Video Cable, or inside the Display Assembly. (Screen Inverter/LCD screen)The Video Cable plugs into the motherboard, under the Keyboard; in an area close to the Alt key on the left side of the Space Bar.It then leads straight up towards the LCD screen, curves towards the left Hinge, and through the left Hinge. From there the Video Cable leads up into the Display Assembly. Connects to the back of the LCD screen, and a small cable comes off the Video Cable to the Screen Inverter.Laptop off, ALL power removed. (Remove the AC adapter {Charger}, and Battery)Suggest lay a soft static free cloth on the table you're working on; and laptop turned Bottom side up, Battery Compartment facing away from you; down on the table. You need to remove the Switch Cover, (Keyboard securing strip); above the Keyboard, and Keyboard laid over; in order to access the motherboard connector for the Video Cable.http://www.insidemylaptop.com/take-apart-sony-vaio-vgn-fz220-repair-power-jack/Go to Step 3. Remove the DVD drive.Go to Step 4. ONLY remove the screws circled in Green. They are for the Switch Cover.Follow Steps 5 through 7. Remove the Switch Cover. (Release those 3 Latches in Step 5, and 2 in Step 6)Note* You want to use Finesse when removing the cover. This is not detailed here.A stiff guitar pick, or a Spudger tool, are infinitely better than using a metal tool.In Step 7 the tool should be gently inserted, on the Right side of the Switch Cover, at the parting line in-between the Switch Cover, and Bottom Cover. (Base Enclosure)Once this side starts to lift up a little, use a small tool to gently pick up on the right Hinge cover. The Hinge cover is part of the Switch Cover.Keep working along the bottom edge, and top edge of the Switch Cover, with your fingers, and pop it off.(See the speakers in Step 8? NOT a good idea to use a metal tool, but also do Not insert the tool you are using; too far in )Remove the two Philips head screws securing the Keyboard, at top.Raise the Keyboard up on the screw side about 1 inch; slide the Keyboard towards the LCD screen a little. You are trying to slide the plastic tabs at bottom of Keyboard, out of the Palm Rest Cover. (Top Cover)Then lift the Keyboard up the screw side, roll over (Top), and lay Keyboard down on the Palm Rest Cover. You do not need to remove it. Just access the Video Cable plug/motherboard connector.Try to physically plug the motherboard side of the Video Cable, in tighter.Photo in Step 10 shows gray Video Cable, and it's Black plug connector.A) How to remove the Display Bezel, and lay LCD screen over a little, to check LCD screen side connection for Video Cable,http://www.insidemylaptop.com/remove-lcd-screen-inverter-board-sony-vaio-vgn-sz645-display/B) More information shown in a disassembly video,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sujKznS_MnsPertinent information is shown;A) 2:35 to 3:13; Switch Cover and Keyboard (Roll over, lay down on Palm Rest Cover)B) 3:31 to 3:49; Video Cable connection, motherboard side. That is what he is disconnecting at 3:49C) 12:20 to 16:10; 1) Display Bezel removed you can see the screen Inverter. It is located at the bottom of the LCD screen.Example of the screen Inverter (Board),http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-Vaio-VGN-FZ340E-15-4-Laptop-Genuine-1-443-890-11-LCD-Inverter-Board-Tested-/170770015618?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27c2afa582Check screen Inverter connection.2) Showing how to partially remove LCD screen, and check Video Cable connection to LCD screenI do Not think you need to remove the Display Assembly; in order to remove the Display Bezel. That is why I posted the Insidemylaptop VAIO VGN-SZ 645 info, above. You can check the laptop, after you may made sure all Video Cable connections are tight; and not put everything back together, before you do.This way if the Video Cable connections are Not the problem, you do not have to disassemble all over again.Visually inspect the sheath of the Video Cable. If there is any apparent damage to the sheath of the cable, there is also a good chance the tiny wires inside the Video Cable, are damaged.(Stretched/Broken)You NEED to verify the Video Cable is Not the problem, before continuing on. Connections weren't it; no apparent visual damage; remove the Video Cable, and take it to a small computer repair shop. There the tech can take the cable, and with a multimeter set to OHM's, check each wire in the cable for Continuity.(Also should have an assistant gently wiggle the cable, and see if there are any intermittent readings on the multimeter. Intermittent reading indicates broken wire/s )Video Cable checks out; connections, and continuity test; the screen Inverter is next.Test requires a Sensitive multimeter. Read fairly expensive,http://www.fonerbooks.com/test.htmSince ease of access, and low cost is a factor for the screen Inverter, most just decide to replace it. (Parts changing I know; but if you do not have access to a sensitive multimeter? Take laptop to a shop to test screen Inverter, and you'll wind up paying for a screen Inverter, AND labor)Screen Inverter checks out, or is replaced, and still same problem?Replace LCD screen. For additional questions, or clarification on anything I have stated above; please post in a Comment.Regards, joecoolvette

Vgn-fz340e can't play DVD movie

I made you an step by step guide which I hope will help.

1. Use another DVD and see if it works. There might be a problem with the DVD and not the player

2.If that didnt work. Right click on My Computer then go to Manage >> device manager and find your dvd driver. click on it and see if there is a yellow question mark next to it? if there is one, then right click on your driver then go to Properties > driver and try to disable then enable the driver.
then check if the yellow question mark is still there. If its not your device should be working properly.

3. If the steps above fail, you need to download the driver software again from the Sony's official website or it might need updating. Please note that you MUST download the specific driver software for your exact laptop model otherwise it can seriously mess with your laptop system.

4.if all that fails, then take your laptop to a hardware specialist, or contact Sony support if your guarantee is still valid.

Hope that helped :)
