My seagate freeagent go isnt working

Most likely there is a serious issue with your drive. The USB bridge is likely still communicating with your computer, thus why you see the device under USB media, however, it appears not to be receiving any information from the drive itself and that is why it is not showing under device manager. Would highly recommend to send to a data recovery service provider if the data is critical. There is a small chance that if you remove the internal drive from your enclosure and remove the USB bridge, connect the drive directly via SATA, it may be accessible. This will void any warranty you may have left on the device. Good luck.

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. Code 43 This message pops up in when i plug in my SeaGate Free Agent GoFlex hard disk.

Try this as a possible fix. This trick can quickly fix many mysterious hardware failures The other thing I've heard of happening is a few of the USB 3.0 ports having problems with USB 2.0 equipment. I know it should be back compatible, but Windows can have problems. Try another USB port to see if that helps.Does the SeaGate cable have 1 or 2 connections to the computer? Unfortunately, most external hard drives need to connect to 2 USB ports to get enough power.I just looked up this problem on Seagate's website, and they pretty much come up with the same answers. Uninstall and re-install the USB drivers with the SeaGate connected. Or use other USB ports. The other suggestions they have don't make sense, if you can't talk to the thing, how do you run Seatools or checkdisk?Fixya doesn't allow me to put in another link at this point, so you'll have to copy and drop this into your address bar.http://knowledge.seagate.com/ka030000000tmkPAAQHere's another write-up on fixing the code 43, I wouldn't do number 6.Update BIOS though, USB is working fine with everything else, it's NOT the BIOS that's having a problem.http://pcsupport.about.com/od/errorc/a/code-43-error.htm

What does it mean to format a usb key?

All the data will be removed, and your external hard drive will be empty and ready for use. It happens a lot when you switch between a Mac and Windows, or your hard drive is new.

My seagate FreeAgent GoFlex external hard drive

Bad news.If a hard drive makes a clicking noise, it's most likely lost forever.I have been able to rescue files from a dying hard drive which refused to cooperate with Windows (however it didn't make weird noises). I just plugged it into an Ubuntu computer and managed to copy a portion of the files with a command line tool called rsync. About one third of the files were corrupted but the rest of them were ok. The copying took several hours to complete. The drive had a significant pile of bad sectors, so that's why...Another (rather difficult) rescue tool would have been ddrescue. Using it would probably take an entire day or so. As long as the hard drive communicates with a linux computer in any way, tools like rsync or ddrescue could be used. However, if a hard drive has reached a point where it makes some extra noises, it's probably way beyond any point of reasonable recovery. Assuming it does not communicate with any computer, be it windows or gnu/linux, fixing your drive could require some extra knowledge, hardware or money. There are companies who are willing to fix that hard drive for an outrageous sum. Before even considering commercial data rescue options, you need to as yourself: "Is my data really worth that much?" If you are working on an important project and years of work is on that drive and there are no backups anywhere, letting a company take care of it could be your cup of tea after all.

Restore factory settings

I dont there is much you can do other than formatting it

Here are the steps for you to format the drive in Windows. This will erase any data that is on the drive. If you right click your Windows my computer icon, or Windows computer icon, click on manage.

On the left double click Disk Management.

Your drive should show.

With your mouse right click the drive, and click format. If you have windows vista or windows 7 you will choose delete volume and then you should get the option to create a new volume.

however this is how to repair and restore a usb data drive to its default status

click start click to open on my computer you should see your usb drive could be E: or something right click select properties there will be an array of options

select the sharing tab option then advanced sharing make sure you have a tick in the share this folder box

then click permissions make sure you have all 3 boxes ticked full control changes and read in windows 7

click start control panel administrative tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes

automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now start

you might tick one box then return after its finished the first repair then return and tick the second box you should not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive

then you restore it to its default status

Right click on usb drive select properties you will have an array of options

Select the hardware option then select your drive properties policies

restore defaults

In XP

Right click on your drive select properties then on customize restore Default in W 7

click start click on my computer you should see your usb drive

right click then select format

another way is to control panel administrative tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select format

you might have to alternate doing this repeatedly until the problem is resolvedhope this helps

RESOLVED!Just because this starts with the same steps as other solutions does not mean it ends with the same fix.1. Click Start2. Right Click Computer: Select Manage.3. The Computer Management Dialog box will appear. 4. Select the Disk Management Icon located in the right pane of the Computer Management Dialog box.NOTE: Under volume you will NOT see the Seagate Drive.5. underneath the volume pane you will see Disk 0, Disk1 and so forth. look for the Seagate drive ... mine was Disk 2.6. Right Click on the Drive: Select Properties. 7. The "Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB Device Properties" will apear. Select the Driver tab.8. Select the Uninstall Button. 9. Unplug your Seagate external hard drive and plug it back in. This should re-install the Drivers and it should work like it use to.P.S. Sorry for the bad grammar\spelling.
