I was playing a video

There is a common problem on this model, there is a capacitor that pops out----a visual look at it will tell you if the problem is it, it will have a physical crack in it. This set uses orange colored pico fuses---look like a little resistor and if the cap went it took one of them out. I can tell you where to look for the cap and the fuse associated with it. Total parts cost if this is what is wrong is under 10 dollars. It does require soldering (fuse and cap each have two leads) but not impossible to do for a do it your self person---this is so common I carry both the cap and fuses when I go to peoples homes---seen it bad in over 40 sets of this age, including one I own. If this told you something you did not know and you want to know where and what to look for, rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free. SD TECH

Dark picture

Ok, this is no doubt a problem in the "Brightness: area. IF the set wasn't as old, sometimes a control on the main Board, could be adjusted, this would increase the voltage to the CRT drive, and "Brighten" the Picture. However with the set being 10 years old, the components would have aged so much, that I doubt, that it would have any effect. As it would only lift the picture by say a dB or a dB&1/2. If a Picture is VERY dark, say -3dB as I suspect yours, is, say, -3dB, that would be about 1/2 the usual brightness. I have no doubt that the components in and around this circuitry, have become faulty. It also may be that the Switchmode power supply, also may be involved, it may have failed, on that voltage "Rail" and be supplying insufficient current, to make the circuit function properly. It may even, be you CRT "Emission" may have failed somewhat and it is on the "Way out". Due to the age of the set, and the type of problem, you have. In my professional opinion, it may be time for a New unit. In my shop, a repair such as this, regardless, and especially, if it is a whole new CRT, then the cost is going to be quite high. I would recommend that you put the money, that you would spend on a repair, towards a new unit, with a long term warranty. You see, even if you "Fix" your existing problems, a 10 yo, set, is still, a 10 yo, set, and will, now, more than ever, will be prone, to break down again, according to the statistics, for units of that age, 72% of all "Repaired" items, fault again, within the next 12-18 months, usually fatally.. If you do entertain the idea of repair, you need to contact, an Hitachi, local office, and ask for a referral, to an authorised service center. you see at an "Authorised" place, they work on the brand name units all the time, they usually have original parts at hand. they are ALWAYS less expensive. They are honest.. You should then ask for a "Quote" for the repair, before proceeding with any work, this way too, you can make up your mind as to repair or replace. I do not recommend that you DIY, if only for the type of fault, that you have, and, the prospect, of spending good money after bad, trying to narrow it down, if at first one doesn't and fix it. Also it is in a high voltage area, and considerable skill is required there. I have included a link for a user manual. Below is a thing called a service manual, I couldn't find an exact one for your unit, but, it will give you the idea of whats required to attend to matters like this, it;s what us engineers use to troubleshoot and repair. have a read...

Was watching tv and power

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. You’ll need to reset the Projection TV and to reset it follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the television and wait for 5 minutes.

2. After 5 minutes unplug the television power cord from the electrical outlet.

3. Let the television remain without power for more then 1 minute.

4. Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet. If the television is plugged into a power surge protector, remove it from there and plug it directly into the wall outlet. Turn on the television. If the issue is resolved, then the problem is with the power surge protector and not the television.

If the issue is not resolved then this might have happened due to over-voltage. Please check the power supply unit for swollen/bulged capacitors and burnt wires/components on the power supply board of your TV. You should try and turn off the TV for 8-10 hours to reset it. Please make sure to turn off and unplug the TV for at least 1 hour (this will drain off current from all components especially capacitors) before you perform any repairs. Also note that the TV consists of very high voltages even when it is in OFF condition. All this is only recommended if you have electrical expertise and know how to solder/re-solder components.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Rylee

Unfortunately there are 2 IC's and a capacitor that can cause this set to be really dark. Without proper troubleshooting it is impossible to diagnose. Have a shop check it out for you. Thanks

The +[-] 120v (Green light) does not come on at

You most likely have an open fuse on the power supply in the 120v line. That means in most cases your horizontal output transistor is shorted. If it is look around the transistor itself and look for any ceramic disc capacitors that may be cracked or split. If I remember correctly I had a few of those models where I think it was C777 that was basically arcing which opened up the fuse and or shorted the transistor too.

Model 50UX58K - picture has distortion &

Hi, if the shadow is colored lines then you probably need the convergence ICs and possible reisitors near them replaced .
If the shadows is just like a ghost of the image or a bar from top to bottom, then check if it does it on every input (dvd for example) , there are blanking bars that you can't see past the edges of the picture and when you have a bad cable signal you can see the ghost of the blanking bar sometimes. if it does it does not show the shadow when watching a DVD then its a signal issue with your cable/satelitte .
If your convergence is the issue, try the adjustments first and if that doesn't correct it, you can replace the ICs using kit # x480293 or stk392-110 (2 ICs) soldered in very technical for even a technician.
repairman cost about $250-$350
hope this helps

Look in the instruction manual for troubleshooting. Also, try calling customer support. If it really still works fine, i would mind it. But since the tv is 10 years old, i would accept the fact that maybe it is time to get a new tv or repiar it.

Hitachi tv shuts off . When I turn on the TV iMessage says please wait then turns off two seconds later.

That sounds like it is not booting properly. I would check for correct power supply opperation and if not that, look for a software reloading procedure in the user instruction manual.
