When a black box appears on the screen it means that your closed captions are on and set to TEXT. l would check to see on a rear input (audio/video) if this happens and if using a coax connection wiggle the cables with set on and doing this--a poor shield connection on a coax cable will do this also.Trying the rear input will rule things out and may offer a way around the issue.
How to take hitachi 51 projection tv lense apart?
Don't try that if you are talking about one of the three lens, very easy to open the wrong way and have the Glycol come out all over the place and it is toxic.I know these sets well--just let me first know what the set is doing and not doing!
