Hitachi 51GWX20B Rear projection HD tv, convergenance/color issue

I bet you have a open resistor for the blue sub yoke. Typically it would be a 2.2 omh or a 1.5 ohm. Some times it is hard to tell buy looking at them. It you have a Ohm Meter, unplug the set, pull the sub yoke plugs from there connectors.(They are the plugs right behind the heat-sinks) . If you know the resister color code it will be a must to determin if any are open or increased in value. If you see a resister that has two red bands and two gold bands, it it a 2.2 ohm. A resister with a brown band, green band, and two gold bands is a 1.5 ohm. On some occasions, you will see a brown band, a white band and two gold bands, this is a 1.8 ohm. This circuit does not give much leeway for subing with wrong values and it even could cause premature failure if the IC's again. One last thing, double check that all the pins made it through the board when mounting and are not touching each other top side of board. As far as the one side of the picture pulling in , I think it is all related. I have seen defective STK392-150's new out of the bag.
Well thats all I can tell you at this point.
Good Luck,

Direct from the Hitachi website - "Integrated HDTV Tuners: Hitachi's new top-of-the-line XWX series features built-in ATSC terrestrial and cable HDTV tuners to provide integrated high resolution, high-definition signal decoding." You will need a seperate HDTV tuner if you do not have cable or satellite and want to watch off-air High Definition channels.

Convergence of Picture

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

I have a Hitachi 57 " rear projection TV, the screen is dark

Unfortunately it sounds like your CRT's ( picture tubes ) are getting weak. You have 3- red, green and blue. It would not be in your best interest to repair it because of the cost of the crt's and if we can still buy them. A lot of analog parts such as those are very hard to locate and is getting worse by the day.

Hitachi 57SWX20B 3D Effect due to green light convergence problem

I'm trying to fix the issue on my 43FDX20B. So far, I'm able to move the lines up and down, but can't get the left/right motion to fix it. The attached link has the dynamic mode instructions, so you can correct this issue yourself.

http://home.comcast.net/~leebailey00/Hitachi_DCAM_Manual.pdf

The only thing I didn't have was the screen overlay jig the manual talks about. I decided to create one myself and use the screen as a beginning template. I went to our local hardware store and picked up some home window weather covering. The roll cost about $15, is a clear strong plastic and the template was very easy to create. I used a straight edge after I put dots on the plastic and measured the lines for being square and equal after I took it off my tv. Good thing is that if you don't like what you make the first time, you have a 25' roll to use to try again (ha).

Projected image is slightly oversized im 16 Standard Mode

The problem was with my cable providers (Knology) cable box settings. Somehow they had changed to zoom 1. I think this happened when I played a VHS tape. If this keeps happening everytime I play a tape or DVD I'll have to remember to reset the vidio on the cable box after each tape or dvd.

Tv is messed up

I got a question.

Do you have any stereo speakers anywhere near your television?

This sounds like something a magnetic field could cause from speakers being too close to the tv.

If so try to relocate them and see if the problem goes away.

Hitiachi Convergence Circuit Resistor Values

This site has been very helpful in diagnosing and repairing my Hitachi 57XWX20B. I recently changed the IC's and a resistor to fixe a convergence problem and had to use the small button on the convergence circuit to get set to return from static mode and enter dynamic mode. I searched everywhere trying to locate the correct resistor values and noticed many other's needing the same information. Here are the results of my research. I obtained some from manuals and others from comparison of the different models. My main focus was finding the values for the 57XWX20B. The resistor values are given in ohms at 1 watt. This means RK42 is a 3.3 OHM 1 watt resistor. RK58 was the problem in my set. It was giving a value of 2.3 and needed to be 4.7. I first replaced the IC's and thought the resistors were all good, but I later noticed my convergence was off. I could manually align it but the magic focus initiation would not save. It gave an overflow error. I bought the sanyo brand of IC's, not the cheap inports and found that if you use a desoldering wick then the repair is easy. The new IC's restored the beautiful color the set had when new. Now it is brilliant as well as converged. My repair cost was:
STK-110 13.00 Bought from local electronic supplier
STK-150 15.00
RK58 3.00 Bought from a local TV repair shop

The elecronic supply store gave me 6 inches of desouldering wick
Total cost: 31.00 Dollars

Picture loss

It sounds as though you have what is referred to as a climental problem. In laymen terms, a transistor, chip or regulator is heating up and breaking down. The way a technician normally isolates this type of problem is by using a cooling agent ( freeze spray ). When the set heats up and the picture goes away, the technician sprays some of the cooling agent on a part of the board ( select a small area, about 6 inches square ) at a time and see if the picture comes back on. When you do finally get to the bad area, the picture should come back on for a short period of time until the bad part heats up again. After a period of time and by using the freeze spray, a person can isolate the exact bad part. Replace that bad part, and any filter capacitors hooked to that bad part and the set should work properly. As always, use caution and unplug the set before opening the set and when using the freeze spray, be sure not to touch any connections in the tv as they could produce shocks.
I hope this has helped and good luck on your problem.
