Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Set has vertical wavy lines.

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, greenish, or blueish or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.
You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com

The only color I have on my tv is green. How do I

mcid1515,

If you have an older set you probably need to turn up the screen drives on the red and blue guns. The largest part of the color signal is the green with red and blue much less. If the gun drives put out less as they age, and they will, periodically the screen drives need boosted. I have a tip at

http://www.fixya.com/support/r6814105-adjust_screen_drive_crt_projection_tvs

This will walk you through the process of setting the screen drives.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Wrong input from remote

Hi there,

Your question is not entirely clear and could be interpreted in several ways, so you may need to explain in a little more detail before the correct answer can be given.

I'm going to assume you have simply selected the wrong input and have either "lost" your TV channels or you are unable to access an external input such as a DVD player, satellite receiver or similar.

To switch between the inputs on your TV (assuming you are using the original Hitachi remote supplied with the TV) you simply need to press the buttons marked "TV", "VCR" (video), "CBL" (cable), "STB" (set-top box) or "DVD" until you find the correct input. The correct button to press depends on which input you are trying to locate and how it is connected to your TV.

In addition, depending on which Hitachi remote you have, the buttons labelled "AV1" "AV2" and "AV3" may also be used to access external inputs. These buttons are alternatively labelled "CD", "TAPE" and "AMP" on some Hitachi remotes. Whether these buttons have any function for your setup again depends on how your external devices are connected to your TV.

As I said, I may have totally misunderstood the question. Your question - or lack of one - could also be interpreted to mean that the buttons on the remote are not corresponding to the correct functions on the TV. You could also be using a universal remote and are unable to switch your TV back to the correct input. In this case, you should probably look for a button labelled INPUT or SOURCE on the universal remote and try pressing this slowly and repeatedly, until you locate the signal/picture from the input you want to watch. You should also make sure this external input is switched on first as this will make it easier to find when flicking through the available inputs.

Please could you explain your problem in a little more detail and include details of any remote control you are using with the TV. I will then be able to give a specific and (hopefully) correct answer to your question. Please reply to me from within this page by clicking on "Add a comment" below your original question.

Thanks,
BElectric
