Canon P170-DH Calculator Questions & Answers
P170-DH calculator. Why is there an E on the display?
OVERFLOW FUNCTION
In the following cases, when "E" is displayed, a dotted line is printed, the keyboard is electronically locked, and further operation is impossible. Press CE/C to clear the overflow. The overflow occurs when:
1) The result or the memory content exceeds 12 digits to the left of the decimal point.
2) Dividing by "0".
3) The sequential operation speed is faster than the calculation processing speed. (Buffer Register Overflow).
! Electromagnetic interference or electrostatic discharge may cause the display to malfunction or the contents of the memory to be lost or altered. Should this occur, use the tip of a ball point pen (or similar sharp object) to press the [RESET] button at the back of the calculator. After resetting, be sureto set the calendar, clock, currency and tax rate again.

Print is very light even after replacing ribbon.
My first thought is that the numbers being "hammered" against the paper are not reaching far enough. Test this theory by putting two layers of paper into the paper feed, (Fold the end of the roll over onto itself) and try printing again. It could be designed for a thicker paper.
Alternatively the new ribbon may also have dried out. Rub the ink ribbon with a paper, or pencil eraser and see if the ink readily comes off, perhaps use a pencil eraser to press it against the paper being fed through the machine.
These are diagnostics to find the error. Further investigation might be to see if there is any particles in the machine preventing it from hammering the numbers against the paper. Something might be in the way of the moving parts, something about the size of a paper hole punch paper, or pencil shaving. Shaking it vigorously upside down might solve this problem.
Good luck ;)

Rather than try to describe the process in words ("lift up the arm, then feed the paper through..."), I'll point you at the illustrated instructions in the manual at the manufacturer's web site: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=349&modelid=9785
Cannot find the constant key for multiplication
How to do constant multiplication or division on the Canon P170-DH calculator
This process actually requires fewer keystrokes than most other calculators. Basically, just do the first problem
and then do the next items with just the next number and the EQUAL key. For example,
*** Constant Multiplication ***
2 (multiply key)
10 (= key)
(The answer 20 shows on the screen. Note, the 2 is still stored as a constant without doing anything, just continue)
4 = (shows the answer 8 on the screen)
20 = (shows the answer 40 on the screen)
100 = (shows the answer 200 on the screen)
*** Constant Division ***
10 (divided by key)
2 =
(shows the answer 5 on the screen, the 2 is still stored as a constant without doing anything, just continue)
100 = (shows the answer 50 on the screen)
500 = (shows the answer 250 on the screen)
4 = (shows the answer 2 on the screen)
--------------
Also note! There is no K visible on the screen to indicate a constant is set.

I played around with mine and found the keys that you change the time and date with by looking over the top of the keyboard. On my model there is a time and date key that has a little calendar and clock actually on the key. That key allows you to switch between date and calendar. After you click on that button you will either see a date or time. To change those numbers use the following keys: The equal (=) key will change date and time by holding the key down till the numbers on the display start to flash. Once they start to flash use the number keys to make your changes. The multiplication (X) key you can use to change am and pm. If you want military time use the division key. If you are changing the date there is an additional key that lets you change the format. What this means is the sequence on the display by the way you view the month, date and year. You can change it so year shows first then month and date or interchange day and month. Once I found those keys it was easy.
