On this tv if i leave the back off it will play

Hi:
You have bad solder connections on the main board. Usually the location to look for is around the flyback transformer, thats the grey or black device with a thick red lead coming out the top of it and going into the top of the picture tube. Cold solder joints are very intermittent and thermal, the set stays on because there is no heat build up from the back being on, bad solder joints will look grey compared to good one that are shiny. So check the board for bad solder connection especially in darken areas of the board where heat has build up in the past. Also check around the power supply area near where the power cord attaches to the board, the big white B+ Resistor, as these sometimes get very warm.

How do I replace the Horizontal Output Transistor

First take the back off , now find the large black round
transformer ( FLY-BACK TRANSFORMER)

near it there should be a heatsink with one transistor
attached to it . You will need to get to the bottom of
the PC board to unsolder it with a 40 watt iron and
some solder braid that you can buy at raidoshack.
After removing the transistor type the part # in google
and you should get many suppliers with prices
normally they cost around 3.00-10.00 so buy a few

you will also need some heatsink compound
you can get that at raidoshack Articsilver works well.

when you receive your parts
put some heatsink compound on the heatsink
slip all three legs of the Horizontal output transistor
and screw the trans back in flip the board over the best
you can or at angel sometime to gat a straight shot
at it with your iron and re solder all three legs . and
your Done

If you have any qustions just coment and ill respond
