i had the same prob and thought it would burn off. It didn't after a month. Read the comments and tried the plug direct into wall socket plus i washed off the tv surface several times. Now no smell. Not sure which action cured the problem but i'm now happy. It was so bad i had to leave a window open and at times i would gag from the smell.

setting up roku it seems to be stuck on select a language

You may need a new power supply for that unit. Does it show any lights or anything?

Factory reset if you can display the menu, otherwise needs a repair

sounds like a bad backlight or inverter!
