I think I know what the "skin tones blue" problem is-you probabaly have the composite video(for the old video-on-one-cord format) connected to the blue of the component video input.(component video is the red/blue green RCA type connectors).

Buy a DVD cleaning kit follow the instructions, sometimes brings it back to life. If no change! the assembly will need to be replaced,"not cost effective" cheaper to replace.

I would start with a DVD cleaner kit for the player. Chances are, if the drive worked before, then it will again; after being cleaned.
If the issue persists, then the DVD drive is failing. Chances are at that point, it would be cheaper to replace the entire unit then just the DVD drive.

Well it depends on what you're recording. If you're trying to record from the T.V. your going to have issues because of the recent switch to digital. If you're recording from homemade VHS to DVD however just put in your VHS, then your blank DVD and hit record. There should be some on screen instructions displayed.

Also you'll probably also have issues trying to convert your old VHS movie collection to DVD because most of the movies would probably be copyright protected.

Verbitim disks might just be the problem.
I have had some experiences in which crappy discs just wouldn't cut it.
I used to own one of those and when I swiched to a better disc it fixed the problem

The laser pickup is likely the problem. You might try finding a replacement here: http://www.electronix.com

I just tried this on LGV774W and it worked :))

To make this player region free (or change the region), do the following:

* Ensure that there is no disc in the player (ie: "no disc" is displayed).
* Press PAUSE
* Enter 314159
* Enter the region code (0 for region free, or 1-6).
* Press PAUSE
* Turn the player off for a few seconds.
* Turn the player back on
* Voila! You beauty!!

Hi, have you tried this? It worked on my LG player.  
1. Open DVD tray 
2. Press "0000" on the remote. 
3. A screen will appear saying NEW REGION CODE displaying the current one. 
4. Press "0" for all zones. 
5. Press the "select" button on the remote. 
6. Close the CD tray. 
7. Power off

use a vcr cleaning tape.
