Change the lamp

I found the answer by taking it to a tv repair. the problem was the ballist the controls the lamp. 105.00 total parts and labor. so all my friends with LG rear projection TV'S check ballist if set keeps turning on and off by itself.

press the menu button on the front panel
while holding button on panel press and hold the menu button on the remote control
service menu will appear and then keep pressing the menu button until you come to lamp hour resetting
press ok on remote
and now lamp hour is reset

It rarely needs cleaning if that is your concern---it is behind the front screen and about 2-3 inches in diameter and round---points up and to the back as it directs the picture into a large mirror there.Some models with the set unplugged and back cover removed you can get to it to see if it is dirty---leave no fingerprints on the lens and clean with a lens cloth.

I see so many here with no sound/nopicture issues:ISSUES: 1. IF sound main fuse/s are good.2. If no power or standby check main fuse, standby power supply and any signsof damage you can see---burnt parts etc.3. almost all these sets the troubleshooting involves checking voltages on the main power board to narrow down theproblem.4. Be safe and if you do not know what you are doing don't open the set.Answers to issues:1. RE:fuses---if a blown fuse is found get a good replacement(not the genericones like Radio Shack). Many fuses are special even aside from amperage--Don'tput a higher rated amperage fuse in the set for any reason.2. RE: power supply in set: if total dead aside from main fuse the set uses astandby power supply that runs 7/24 and a main supply (some are combined andsome not.Here aside from checking fuses you want to examine all the filter caps on thepower/standby to see if any are puffed up or buldged up in some fashion--Iattach a photo of a good one---top should be silver metal and PERFECTLY flatand have no brown material coming out on top or bottom.What happens in the standby area is they use caps with too low a voltage rating(saves money) which causes them to fail in a year or two---the standby runs7/24 and the heat dries out the caps and they fail.3. Trouble shooting consists of the above and then at some point you have tobuy and try a board to see if it fixes it or not.4. Safety first--no TV set is worth getting injured or even killed over.First thing to do if you open the set is look for bad caps that are puffed up on top like these.

I am a service tech.
After reading about the this particular l.g. set i decided to llok into the optic engine and
have found that the blue polarizing lense is crook.
Believe it or not but the set will work fine if you remove this lense, alternatively if you remove the lense
and want to replace it. Go to ebay and type in hoya polarizing lense. Buy the 72 mm circular lense.
Then cut it to size and replace it .
Has fixed many of my customers sets.

I just replaced the bulb/lamp on my LG RU-52SZ51D TV. It was fairly simple. Basically you have 2 screws that hold on the cover panel on the right side of the TV. Once you take off the cover, you'll then see a metal tray with a handle. That has 3 screws, you can then pull out the tray and see the bulb/lamp. The lamp has 3 more screws that hold the little brackets that hold the lamp in place. Last you have the 2 power wires. One is connected by a screw on the left of the lamp, the other is attached by a nut and a washer on the back of the lamp, where you would usually screw in a normal light. The two wires are just connected to a single plug to the right of the lamp which you can remove, you get the new lamp with the wires already attached. All you have to do is plug it in after you mount it back up. Here is the info on purchasing a lamp, sorry but I am still in the process of learning how to reset the lamp indicator light...

Here is how to reset the lamp timer.
lamp reset on lge :to reset lamp timer press and hold ENTER or OK on tv display and MUTE on remote at the same time for 5 to 10 seconds, lamp reset box will pop up you can then reset lamp.

If the lamp is damaged you will see that the lamp is either shattered in the lamp housing or the filament looks charred. If you know how to access the lamp housing please check it and let me know. If you do not know how to do this , let me know and I will give you detailed instructions.

You can see the IR receiver near the standby led. normally Ir receiver and standby led are fitted on the same board. And the same board will be fitted on the frond panel of the tv. Have added a picture for your reference.

Without more detail it's impossible to say for sure. It sounds like the bulb may have gone bad and that needs to be replaced.

I would try replacing the lamp. This will probably fix your problems.

If the second light is blinking to orange or red, that is usually the lamp indicator light on an LG DLP tv. That indicates your bulb needs replaced, or something surrounding the bulb has failed (like the cooling fan for the bulb for example) IF you have a spare bulb handy, I'd replace the bulb, keeping in mind if you touch any part of a new bulb with your bare hands, you just cut the life of the bulb by more then half.

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, greenish, or blueish or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.

The main reasons of your problem is the bulb which is already came to its end. But before you replace the bulb I would advice you to work first on itspower supply. Look for open fuse/fusible resistor and spot some bad solder joints. This will do the same symptoms like what it showing now. If you don't have necessary tools and test instruments, and can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the problem. Don't attempt to work in the power supply if you don't know the safety precaution of handling it, there some stored electricity enough to hurt you with a little mistake only.

is it by chance the "lamp" light thats turning on and off? you may have a lamp out and need replacing most of the time this is the cause..

The light engine is defective. The part is an entire assembly. It is about $650.
