Why won't my Dyson DC23 turn on? I have checked the breaker and everything is in working order. It was turning on and off the last time I used it.

Hi Donna. You've made a good start in making sure the outlet is working. The manual can be seen here: Dyson stowaway DC23 Helpline Manual The thing I pick up on in particular is your saying that the unit was turning on and off the last time you used it. Based on a number of repair and troubleshooting forums, it sounds like the unit was overheating, or close to overheating before. There is a thermal-cut-out switch to keep the unit from overheating to the point of damage, or, worse, starting a fire. If the interlock has kicked in, it can take 30 minutes to an hour for the unit to cool enough to reset the switch. Common things are common, and rare things are rare. With that in mind, the most likely causes of overheating are:
  1. Blockage somewhere in the vacuum line.
  2. The brush head being jammed / trying to turn when something is impeding it.
  3. Clogged filters.
First rule - unplug the vacuum when working on it. After that,
  1. Remove the various bits of tubing, u-bends, and such, and make sure that they are clear - no paper wads, hair clumps, or such. For long stretches of the tubing, a long bent coat hanger (marshmallow roaster configuration) can be used to gently probe the long stretches.
  2. Try to rotate the brush - remove any obvious yarn, hair, string, rubber bands, etc, built up on the brush.
  3. Wash the filters. They are meant to be washed every few months. If they haven't been, they may be so clogged that the motor isn't drawing in enough air to cool itself.
That should give you a good start. If none of this works, there are toll free numbers to talk to Dyson support in the manual. Good luck, and Happy Holidays! D

How do i remove the brush bar?

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson. It's quick and easy to remove the brush bar from DC23's turbine head - there are two round catches to turn, and a slider catch to undo: remove-brush-bar-fmehdrq454ob45y5ya3zvwf0-1-0.jpg Once you've removed the soleplate, the two brush bar sections pull out. You can then check the Turbine head for blockages, and carefully cut away any threads or hair taking care not to damage the bristle tufts. I hope this helps. Where are both filters?

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson. DC23 has two filters - a washable pre-filter, and a HEPA post-filter which needs no maintenance. Both are engineered to last the lifetime of the vacuum without replacement in normal use. The correct way to wash the pre-filter is shown in the video below - we recommend using cold water without detergent, and allowing at least 24 hours for the filter to dry completely before replacing it. In normal use this should be done at least once every 3 months. As the post-filter needs no maintenance, it's sealed within the machine and cannot be accessed by the user. I hope this helps, but please let me know if you'd like any further advice. Is it possible to blow outwards with dyson dc23?

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson. I can confirm that DC23 doesn't include the facility to blow outwards. The machine hasn't been designed or tested for this purpose, so we would advise against using it in this way or attempting to adapt it. Beater bar will not turn on dc23.

Hi Jean, it's Jack at Dyson. I'm sorry to hear your DC23's Turbine head doesn't seem to be working correctly. Often this can be caused by a blockage in the floor tool, wand or hose, or because the filter needs a wash. However, I note you have already checked for this. We'd appreciate the opportunity to take you through some quick troubleshooting checks when you have your machine to hand. If we're not able to resolve the issue we can confirm if your machine is within our 5-year guarantee period, and whether a repair or replacement part is covered. You can reach our experts directly on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).
