Find the Aspect ratio button on the TV remote. Press it a number of times to cycle through the options. Stop when the picture is the shape you want. Have a read of your TV manual. Many times HD channels will come in more clear, but with a smaller picture or widescreen view. There should be a button on your remote called 'wide' or 'zoom' and it will let you adjust the size on the fly. You probably have the video cable plugged into the wrong spot. What are you using to connect your tv and what is the source of the video/sound? Check the back of the source and be sure that the video out is plugged in correctly on the source, leading to the video in on your tv.

Sounds like you might have a defective unit, or the source that is connected to your tv (cable box, dvd etc) is going out. A lot of times if you have a cable box, glitches, loss of sound and/or color are because of the quality of the input source. Try changing the channel.
