My RT2910 will not turn

These units aren't made for speaker experimentation. Disconnect all speakers and try again. If it doesn't come on stick a fork in it - it's done.

A hands-on tech might be able to help.

What source(s)? Verify the speaker setup with the test tones to prove the hardware is all okay. Then go back and evaluate the conditions that create the problem. It could be an external cause.

We have everything hooked up

If it won't turn on start with absolutely nothing attached but the power and see if that helps. If it does, crack the manual and add things one at a time.

You would need audio input from either the TV itself (if it uses an antenna) or the actual source of the program you're watching on the Cable/Sat box as applicable. The manual covers both but I recommend the latter.

Audio power is relevant only between the amp and the speakers. Check the volume setting of the source and any audio settings in the PC.

SPDIF is not Red and White. If anything it is a single coaxial RCA connector.

Wattage specs for comparison are pure fiction at this level. 10% distortion fudges the number upward.

The unit shut itself off and now it won't turn

Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as a root cause for intermittent shutdown.

You should have the HDMI plugged into the Home theater unit. The theater unit then is attached to the TV using the HDMI out.
The home theater unit passes the HDMI through to the TV while playing the audio for you.
You will likely need to select the correct source on your RT2910.
Here is a link to the manual.

See the section entitled "Connecting to HDMI Components" for an illustration of what I have described above.

You can try using an optical cable but you will likely run into the same issue. Each time you change the channel the digital stream is interrupted. The HT likely takes this long to start the decode process.

  • Press the Off button and the Mute button on the remote at the same time.
  • Press the Component Select button for the device you wish to program.
  • Enter the two-digit code of the product you are programming into the remote and push the Enter key.
