l120 doesn t have an alternator

Check the off delay relay. If you find it has failed, remove and bypass (match wire colors). It will run fine without it.

Make a test lamp with a headlamp bulb. Connect it on the solenoid output starter lug. Turn the key; does it light ... starter faulty if it does, solenoid faulty if it doesn't. If starter, give the motor housing a thump with the wooden handle of a 2lb hammer. That may get you going until new brushes are fitted.

I was having the same problem I was tired of messing around so I bypassed JD, I tracked down all 3 wires off the fuel solenoid run the one that sucks in the pin to a pushbutton find the power off the key so you have an on-off now find the wire that holds the pin in fuse it and tie it into the key side leveling the ground wire that will plug into its factory plug, must be grounded, PS you can find the fuel diode probably needs cleaning hope this helps someone it's a head-scratcher, I haven't had a problem since,

When you try to turn over engine with key it turns over slowly and stops? It acts like starters not working properly? If this sounds like it and it's a single cylinder Briggs and Stratton engine ohv's your valve specs are off they need to be checked and adjusted every 200 hrs. It would be best to completly run it out of gas prior to storing it but if that is not possible I reccomend Sta-bil gas and oil treatment.
