Have you tried playing the tape in another device? Adjusting the recording volume if that is an option? Look for the user manual pdf online and also try a brand new or different brand tape to ensure that is not the problem.

The model is not a DX44 as that is a dBx unit attached to either a Tascam 44 or 40-4. Hi Charly,I don't know what model you are talking about but it sound like a sticky pinch roller linkage and needs to be cleaned and regreased. I do them all the time. If not please clarify what you are working with.

Some of them have mode or Mechanism belts that with lack of use will get soft and stretch. It all depends on what model you have as it is not stated.

It is probably a hard to find record electronics problem and possible that the record bias is staying on partially. This will erase partially the audio and apply the clicks. You are going to need a good Technician for this. A Technician usually has to get a tape out of a machine when this happens. In radio when I was Chief Engineer for several stations in Chicago I would send my defective decks to Russ at New Jersey Factory Service in Emerson NJ. This type of model does not have an eject button as the deck is designed so that when the head is retracted as in stop mode you simply pick up the door and pick the tape out of the well. This is pretty much the same in all the lower end Porta Studio models.

I'm not familiar with the Tascam DP-01 but many multi-track recorders don't commit effects to the track until the mixdown phase. The thinking being that you cannot eliminate a "bad choice" effect once it's down to tape (old school term) and so they allow adding the audio tweaks at the final stages of recording. Here they hope you can appreciate the entire mix and then decide what sweetners to add.
