Recording a dvd to the hard drive

look for an option in the DVD menu for dubbing this means to copy contents to hdd (usually cannot do it with copy protected discs but will be ok with a disc you made yourself)

Video output showing black and white display

Make sure the DVD is not on the PAL system. Trying to watch a PAL dvd on a NTSC TV or DVD player will play it back in black and white only.

How to finalize dvd disc

In the menu, you will find the control to click on finalizing the dvd-R. DVD +R does not need finalizing.

My DVD Disc no longer

  • Hi, I can help.

  • Have you cleaned the lens on your DVD player recently? If not it will get dirty and not be able to read any disks. Often times people just forget to do this.

  • If you go to Best Buy (or where ever) and get a lens cleaning disk and run it through your DVD player three or four times and let it get real good and clean. If the lens is extremely dirty you may have to fool with it for a bit to get the disk to be read to clean the lens.

  • These disks have little bristles on it that "sweep" the lens clean. Good thing is they are universal so you can clean DVD, CD, Computer Player. I recommend giving any disk players a run with the lens cleaner once a week weather you use it regularly or not.

  • It can also be the lens is worn out but I have seen many of DVD players end up in the trash from nothing more than a lens that needed a good cleaning. The lens cleaning disks cost roughly $10usd.

  • As for a direct replacement for your DVD Recorder/ VCR combo they are no longer made. The only place you will find these will be on e-bay and places like that. Being the great unit it is, if someone is getting rid of it, there is a reason for it. I would try cleaning the lens and if it works great and if not then this unit might be worth having someone put a new lens in for you.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here and I will respond.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

When I insert a DVD

Hello
Just replace its strip that goes from laser assembly to main board first. Normally, this strip will get breaked internally and cannot be detected as they are carbon tracked, and always have to move along with the laser pickup assembly as the set works. If any one amoung this connections get a break, the fault you describes here will occur. Replace it first. If it is attached with the laser head assembly by mould; there is no way other than replace the whole unit. In some Sansui sets the fittings will be same as I reffered here. If it does not help you, laser pickup assmebly is faulty and should be replaced with same type and number. Insist on same number, as it is the critical part of your device. OK.

WHAT DVD TO USE IN THE VRDVD5000B

all support DVD-RW or +RW these days
your problem most likely is that you downloaded some movie with an unrecognizable avi codec that runs only on PC. And you burned that on a dVD without checking with Virtuadub first the videoformat.

First test every movie with a DVD+RW that you can erase or it gets costly. If older type DVD-RW might not be supported

I believe the VRDVD4005 manual (which is the same as the VRDVD5000) is available on a Sears sponsered website called managemylife.com. I hope this helps you. The customer service number should be on the back of the unit to order a remote.

DVD DRAWER won't open

OK.
I assume the display does not say 'locked' when you press eject.
A DVD drawer is run by a small rubber belt on most of these old machines. This belt can be worn out (Very common)
The DVD drawer position is detected by a switch that can be pressed in or out to detect the drawer is closed or open. This switch can cause the drawer to stay in if it thinks the drawer is not yet closed. Cleaning the switch (Take the DVD drive out and remove and clean or replace the switch) can usually fix this.
A fault with the DVD process cicuit board can also cause this. I would recommend a new machine if this is the case.
Testing:
Bad belt - the DVD drawer shifts a bit when the eject button is pressed.
Bad switch - a whirring sound can always be heard when the DVD is first powered on. May give an error in the display.
Bad process board - Generally, says open forever or close forever and will not change back to normal display. You cannot get any other functions to work after you press eject. Unplug the machine, its normal until you press eject again. (just a generic common thing)

I have a Sansui model VRDVD4005. When I put a DVD

I think you need to take it to the service center, because there's nothing that you can do all by your self. The problems starts from the optical lens/ laser pick up, replacing the lens could be necessary.

What dvd do i need to record or what do i have to

You will need a DVD-R or a DVD-RW to record. As with VCR tapes, just insert the DVD and press record to start recording. Good luck to you!
