RE: Sansui DVD Recorder-VCR Combo - VRDVD5000
SAN0218-250GB DVD+RW Recorder

You may want to contact Sansui direct @ http://www.sansui-global.com/english/contactus.php but I don't think you'll get anywhere! They don't have a great support system for their products as far as I can see.
Some DVDs and a lot of other things are built to break easily, offering no repair or troubleshooting support, and it's a shame!
When I find I've purchased such a product and it doesn't even pay to have it fixed (always worth getting an estimate though) I like to take it into the garage, put it on the bench and sludge hammer it to death or scavenge it for parts!

DVD records a black screen if tv is on standby.

You have tuned the dvd recorders channels? dont forget a recorder dvd/hd/vcr is actually a tv set without its own screen and to record from channels you need to have its on board channels tuned in... what you have been probably doing is using a function on many recorders that records direct tv... what this means is it records the feed back signal through the scart lead of what ever channel your tv is tuned to at the time that is why no tv on = no signal

DVD PLAYS CD'S BUT WONT PLAY DVD'S

Aquarius0128 there are two things to consider here.. dvd's recorded on a computer need to be closed/finalized after you have recorded onto them in order to be used on a stand alone player.. they will play ok on original recorder because of the design of these machines finalizing prepares the structure of the disc so it can be recognised by other players as a dvd video disc.. you will usually see a 'finalize disc' option in your recording program

Second issue is this.. even if finalized an older (or even some modern) stand alone players will not recognise a recorded disc made on a computer or even if it can there are different formats DVD+R DVD-R and even DVD-RAM and DVD-RW (the two latter ones are rarely recognised outside a computer)

My Sansui recorder records blank when I use the timer!

first of all make sure the time and date is set correctly on your recorder (options or set-up usually) second make sure an aerial input is going to your recorder (not just to your tv (the recorder is in the loop with aerial lead to it then from it to tv)) third make sure the on-board tuners are tuned to the correct tv channels (recorder is just a tv without a screen and has its own channels that need to be tuned in)

What type of dvd do you need to use to record?

If you click on the "VRDVD5000 DVD Recorder...Combo" link at the top of the page and scroll down towards the bottom of the page that brings up, you'll find an outline spec for the machine. Just looking at that, it would appear you ought to be trying "dvd-r" - (The difference between plus and minus is significant - it's a shame nobody thought to make the names more distinctive). Suggest you buy a single dvd-r, see how you get on, and only invest in a bigger pack once you know it's going to work. A.

Universal Remote

I dropped and busted my origional remote control. I bought a new one from www.newremotecontrol.com , there are many sites that sell origional remotes, so shop around. it is not a universal remote, but the actual remote for the product... a little pricy, but worth it to have all the funtions available.

Low volume on playback

The volume control on the TV does not affect the recording. However, if you were recording from a set top box, and you turned the volume down on the box and not the TV, then this would cause the problem you describe.

If this is the case, then try to keep the STB volume at maximum and only use the TV volume control.

Also, some DVD players and VCRs have a lower output than the standard TV tuner, so an increase in volume is usually needed.

You might want to try some test recordings to see what happens.
