Have you already replaced the drum? If you have not replaced the drum that may be why you are getting smudges. If you have already replaced the drum, here is the reset procedure. The Drum LED blinks if the drum unit is near the end of its life. Use the drum unit until you have a print quality problem, then replace the drum unit with a new one. The Drum LED continues to blink if the drum counter was not reset when you replaced the drum. To reset the drum follow the instructions below: Open the front cover of the printer. Press and hold down Go button for about 4 seconds until al the LEDs light up. Once all 4 LEDs are lit, release the Go button. Close the front cover. CautionReset the drum counter only when you replaced the drum unit with a new one.Related Models HL-2030, HL-2030R, HL-2040, HL-2040R, HL-2070N, HL-2070NR http://www.tonerovernight.com

Open the front cover and leave open while completing the following steps: Turn the printer off. Hold the 'go' button while turning the printer on. All panel lights should be on. Release the 'go' button. Press the 'go' button 2 times. Pause. Press the 'go' button 5 times. The toner light should be off. The paper light should be on. Close cover. The ready light should be the only light on.

Red "Paper" light blinking Brother HL-2040

Just started happening.

No paper jams, checked every possible nook and crevice in the printer.  Took out the toner, drum, etc.  Turned the printer upside down, shook it, cursed at it, but no luck.  Tried it with the paper tray full and almost empty.  No go..

When trying to reset, all lights go on in proper sequence, fan runs, "Ready" light goes on for a second and then goes off - the red "paper" light then starts blinking.

Any ideas?  Thanks.

I agree with another su=olution. The paper light was blinking on and off sugesting a paper jam. Paper had jammed in the back roller and displaced the small lever out of its slot.
Open rear cover, open paper guide by pulling it downwards so you can see the rollers, In the middle of the guide you will see a black lever about 25mm long to the right of this you will see a small slot. The guide will have been pushed to the left of this slot and the Plastic cam will be bowing toward the front of the printer (about 3mm). You need to pull the 25mm lever towards the rear of the printer and then slide the plastic cam to the right so the blade part of the cam slides into its correct slot. The blade is about half a mm thick and the slot is the same and is about 60mm to the right of the lever Use a torch to see it easier. This is a 2 minute job once you see what is wrong.
Hope we have helped someone out there fix a printer

Got the same problem, but in fact it WAS a paper jam. Open both the back panel (can you see the orange roller clearly? If so, no jam) and the front panel. Grab the handle and take out the toner and drum and check there is no paper. Chances are there will be.

Error Light on Brother HL-2170W

I am trying to diagnose a problem with my Brother HL-2170W wireless laser printer. According to my son, the printer stopped working because of a paper jam that he removed without forcing the paper. However, he was unable to get the printer back on line as the indicator light "Error" remained on. In the course of diagnosing the problem, I tried removing the printer cartridge; it was then that I discovered that the cartridge is jammed. I can depress the little green lever to the left of the cartridge, which is supposed to allow the cartridge to release, but cartridge remains stuck in place. Are the Error light and stuck cartridge related; in any event, how do I remove the cartridge to check for paper jams inside the machine? Thanks.

Do not try to depress the green lever, since you need to remove the cartridge AND its base altogether. Just grab the front middle part of the assembly, pull it out slowly and steadily. You may need to apply extra force in doing so as it does take some effort to disengage the cartridge assemly from its seated position.
After the cartridge is removed, you may find some jamed paper inside. simply remove it and the printer should work again.

I have a hl-2230 Brother.

I have a hl-2230 Brother. The toner light came on, steady light, and it wont print. I replaced the cartridge, and it is stilll the same. I covered the two sensor holes on the sides of the cartridge with black tape...still the same. I opened the cover, turned on all four lights, shut the cover, unplugged it and it still doesnt work. Help?

When the Toner light is steadily ON, this means either of the following are true:

  • Toner life end - Replace the toner cartridge with a new one.
  • Cartridge position error -The toner cartridge is not installed correctly. Take out the toner cartridge and put it back into the printer again.
Follow these steps when replacing the drum unit:
  1. Make sure that the printer is turned on and the Drum LED is blinking. Open the front cover of the printer.
  2. Press and hold down the Go button for about 4 seconds until all the LEDs light up. Once all four LEDs are lit, release the Go button. NOTE: Do not reset the drum counter when you replace only the toner cartridge.
  3. Pull out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.
  4. Push down the blue lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit.
  5. Unpack the new drum unit and toner cartridge. Hold the cartridge level with both hands and gently rock it from side to side five or six times to spread the toner evenly inside the cartridge. NOTE: Put the toner cartridge in the drum unit immediately after you have removed the protective cover.
  6. Put the toner cartridge firmly into the new drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put the cartridge in properly, the blue lock lever will lift automatically. NOTE: Make sure you insert the toner cartridge properly or it may separate from the drum unit.
  7. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab from right to left and left to right several times. Return the tab to the home position (?) before you put the drum unit back in the printer. If you do not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.
  8. Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly in the printer.
  9. Close the front cover.
  10. Make sure that the Drum LED is now off.
