How do you get a
On the HL-5140, you can print out a config page which will show the page count on it by pressing down the
Go button (the blue button). Hold it for a few seconds, until the config page starts to print out.

Need to get a total
hold down the "blue GO" button on the printer intill it prints the report.

I have a brother HL 5140 and I put in a new drum

Probablly the laser sendiing unit is dirty. Take out the toner look up at inside there is a place in the top inside above the drum in the middle carfully wipe inside small **** with a cloth and blow out with canned air
If that doesnt solve the problem then you have a bad laser,its hard to tell with out me testing them but the image is put one the paper with the laser- drum- toner-fuser working together so that should be the culprit

Dark lines along right side
Seems that the Laser Drum is actually starting to fail.
This requires replacement, unfortunately there is no "fix" for these.

Continuous problem with my HL5140...paper
As laser printers age occasionally the pickup rollers need to be changed. Other possible problems include non-visible paper jams (In which case you would need to disassemble the printer to remove) or even maintenance counters that have run down.
WON'T PICK UP PAPER
Paper feed problem:
Take the paper tray out. On the paper tray you will see a narrow separation pad, rub this clean with a damp cloth. The tray may have a roller on it, if it does clean it. Then underneath of the printer, where the paper tray fits, there is a roller. Clean it too.
Try printing again.

My printer prints but on
The toner powder is not evenly distributed or it sticked together, A light shaking the toner cartridge will the distribute evenly the toner. Maybe is it stock for a long period of time.
The first 2 letters do not print
Hello, I assume you mean the 1st 2 characters of a document are'nt printing. If this is so you could try setting the left and right margins in a bit more in case you are trying to print something out of its range. Also, make sure your printer properties are set for the correct paper size you're using (this'll be under 'printing preferences) it may be set by default to 'letter' when you're using A4, or vice versa. Also, if you're using MS Word, check the paper size setting is also the same as the one you using.
