How do I slide to "write" position With memory card?
Hold the card so that the label is facing you with the angled corner to the top right. Look along the left edge and find the very small slider switch. Slide the switch up (down is locked and up is unlocked). If it is a little tight, use your finger nail.

Pictures are blurry
The most common causes of blurry pictures are not holding the camera still and correctly pressing the shutter release button or using a slow shutter speed. Let\'s talk about properly holding your camera first. Always hold your camera with both hands. With an SLR such as yours, grip the left side of the camera with your left hand and cradle the camera from underneath with your right hand using you thumb and index fingers to zoom. Hold your arms so that both elbows rest on either side of your chest and brace the top of the camera against your forehead. This forms a rigid triangle of support. The second thing you must do is properly press the shutter release button. Do not poke the button because you will jerk the camera and that can cause blur. Instead, start to press the button gradually increasing the pressure until the shutter trips. It should trip almost by surprise. This is very similar to how a marksman pulls the trigger on a gun.Assuming that you are holding your camera correctly, not "punching" your shutter button and your camera is not defective, here are two easy ways to solve your problem. First, you could use the manual exposure mode and keep your shutter speed at 1/500 second or faster. Second, go to the "S" shutter priority mode and set the shutter speed above 1/500 second. Your camera will automatically adjust the f-stop (lens diaphragm opening) and "film speed" for proper exposure. Please let me know if this resolved your problem.
Battery says not for this camera but it is the right battery
Contact Nikon tech support at
www.nikon.com to see what they advise. You may have to replace the battery. If you have a backup battery try it. I have had a similar problem occur on my D-90 and have had to recharge the battery even though it had been on the charger over three hours and the indicator light said it was charged.
When I installed it in the camera, the battery indicator said it was not charged. After I charged it again, it worked fine.
Why won't it turn on
Check the Nikon website at
www.nikon.com. There you will have access to tech support and other information which may be helpful. It may also list an 800#.

OK, first off charge your battery and try again. Probably won't do anything but low power does cause problems. Second, check to make sure the mirror isn't stuck on its stop. If it doesn't move up and down freely, there may be a problem with the mirror. Finally, usual cause is motor failure in the aperture unit or shutter failure. If you can lift the mirror, lift it gently and make sure the shutter blades are laying flat. Unfortunately Nikon stopped selling parts over a year ago so you would have to send it to Nikon.
Well I have had my nikon D3100 now for a year and
Check your manual. I suspect you are also getting an ERR message in your settings screen. This happens to me occasionally. There is an explanation for the ERR message in your manual. I usually am able to fix mine by turning the camera off and on. Sometimes, but rarely, I have to remove and reseat the battery. The manual says if it happens frequently you should contact Nikon support.
