There is no formula used in data dropdown list, so it can not be verified as a formula using evaluate formula, trace errors, trace dependents, trace precedents etc.

If you want to create such lists simply:-

• Select input range then goto
  data --> validation --> allow, list --> select the list range
• To veryfy you can follow the same process
  data --> validation --> allow, list ,
  now you can see the exact range from where the data is picked.

The formula in both versions is the same:

=countif(range,value)

i.e. The below formula will increase its count by one if any of the 18 cells it's checking are equal to 1.
=countif(A1:B9,1)

To find the second character in a string in A1 use =mid(A2,2,1)
To check if it is a number use =isnumber(value(mid(A2,2,1)))

You're right - it was caused by recording a macro. When you record a macro you are given the option to store the new macro in "This Workbook", a "New Workbook" (the default), or in a "Personal Macro Workbook". It looks like you selected "Personal Macro Workbook".
The recorded macro is stored in a special workbook called "Personal.xls". This workbook is loaded every time Excel is loaded. If you don't want this workbook loaded, then just delete it or rename it.
The file is buried deep in Microsoft's application data area. On my Vista computer it's in C:\Users\frogfund\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART On my Windows XP computer it's in C:\Documents and Settings\frogfund\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART. Depending on your computer your Personal.xls might be in a slightly different location. You might need to do a search using Windows Explorer.

Are you using Office Excel 2003? That website is for the 2007 version. That button does not exist in the 2003 version. You will need to upgrade to Office 2010 if you want the button.
