Thread the nut counter clockwise.

The plunger on mine cannot be removed. I just checked it to make sure. If you remove it, you have broken the unit. Just rinse with water. The plunger should not get dirty of used properly. A rinse under running water is enough.

When you pull out the stopper is it completely intact? there should be a hole at the bottom of the stopper were a rod goes through. That moves on an axis pulling and pushing the stopper up and down as you pull and push the lever. You have to make sure you get the rod in that hole for the pop-up to work. You can google pop up assembly and look for an diagram. good luck

Try turning off the circuit breaker and turning it back on, pushing the reset button firmly on the bottom of the disposer, and checking to make sure it's not jammed and rotates freely. If it is jammed you can put a disposer wrench or allen wrench in the hole in the bottom and rotate the shaft to free it. There might already be a wrench under your sink for that.

12 years is middle aged for an appliance, but the problem is probably one of the garbage disposal big three: a tripped circuit breaker, a tripped reset button, or a jammed disposer. With the breaker turned off, make sure the disposer's shaft rotates freely. it's likely due to an air lock. Here's what you can do to resolve this issue: Manually Clearing an Airlock: Run the jets on low for about 30 seconds. Then run the jets on high for another 30 seconds. Repeat this process 3 or 4 times. If you hear a gurgling sound and see air bubbling up, continue running your hot tub until it pushes all the air out.
