Have you considered that the scanner might not be compatible with Vista?

8100 Visioner conflicts with Vista
Verified to work with Vista Home Premium x64 (should work for x32 as well):
1. Make sure your 8100 is unplugged.
2. Go to Visioneer's website and download drivers for the OneTouch 9420 scanner:
http://support.visioneer.com/products/home/9420/downloads_1.asp
3. Install the drivers. Nothing will work... yet, don't worry.
4. Now plug in your 8100. You'll get a message saying that Vista wants to find drivers. Select "Ask Me Later" or just cancel.
5. Next, open up Control Panel and then Device Manager. Find your 8100
in there (probably listed as "Unknown Device") and then right click on
it and say "Update Driver Software". Now click "Browse My Computer For
Driver Software" then "Let Me Pick From A List Of Device Drivers On My
Computer".
6. Scroll down to "IMAGING DEVICES" then find Visioneer, then you
should see the "Visioneer 9420" driver. Select it. You'll get a
warning from Vista, but continue anyways. That's it... everything
should work.

I can't get my Dell
Currently there's no Windows 7 driver available for this Scanner. But still you can install it on both windows Vista and Windows 7 systems using the Xp Cd or setup. If you have the cd, copy files on your computer and extract the Setup file in a specific folder (do the same even if you downloaded it instead of using a CD). After you are done, right-click the setup file you've extracted in a new folder, select "Properties", and in the properties windows, click the "Compatibility" tab, there select the option available "run this program........." click "apply" and then "Ok". Now close all running programs and try installing the modified setup. It should work fine. But if in case, there's still problem installing, open "Device Manager" (Right-click "My Computer and select "Manage" and then "Device Manager"), from the lists of available devices, right click the scanner name highlighted with yellow band followed by interrogation mark (the scanner must be switched On and be connected to the computer.), and select "Update driver", now from the new window, select to search the driver manually and click "Next" and then "Browse", locate the folder where you saved the driver and proceed forward with the wizard. That should do the trick.
If you need further help, let me know.
Good luck.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Help is here,
You have compatibility problems with visioneer and Vista, I helped a few people last week with the same problem.
I recommended them too www.cnet.com for the latest paperport download and got my Fixya button pressed.

Scanner
After downloading the visioneer 9420 driver file (found on the visioneer site, but before installing it, remove your old 8100 driver, then install the 9420 driver by running the .exe file you downloaded from visioneer. Then, use Device Manager, go to -update device drivers and in the listing you should see the 8100 listed. Double click on it, click on -update, go to -browse my computer for driver software, then go to -let me pick from a list, then you should see the 8100 scanner appear, click on it, click on next, and then it will install the 9420 driver. My 8100 is working great on a vista system. Don't get rid of that scanner! It works!

Visioneer 8100 connected via USB cable.
I had the same problem. After I downloaded the driver I disconnected the scanner.
Then restarted the PC and after up, plugged in the scanner to my USB, Windows found it and installed it. Now the system recognizes the scanner. However, I am still
looking for a user manual to know how to use the scanner. I performed a scan ok to the desktop, but cannot find the document on the system. ed
