Did you clean all the lenses? There are three on this unit; the emitter lens, the grating lens, and the objective or focus lens; probably the one you cleaned. These steps must be done by a tech and clean room standards must apply. The next best thing to do is just replace the laser assembly, as the above is labor-intensive...accordianman

Im pretty sure this is to do withthe laser, try using a cleaning cd, put your head next to the player and listen to if the actual disc is moving inside.
this might evan be a problem with the cd motor.

This maybe due to overheating of some Sort.
Try taking it out of where it is where theres a good flow of air.
Then try running a cd.
Try Putting in a Cleaning cd, this maybe a fault with the laser.

Could be one channel has failed in the amplifier caused by 40 year old components failing. Could be a shorted speaker lead, damaging the amplifier. Job to say without seeing it on the work bench with test gear.

The cueing mechanism should lift and lower the tone arm regardless of whether there is oil in the cylinder or not. The silicon oil is used to dampen the movement. If the lever does not operate the tonearm, then there is mechanical damage under the platter.
