Stephen, This is not the type of repair that you can solve just by asking online. There are all kinds of components - in circuit ahead or / and after capacitors - not to mention a number of capacitors as well - that can cause this problem. Test equipment, schematics and a understanding is required. Bring the equipment to a repair shop and you'll probably learn it'll cost more to troubleshoot and repair than it is worth. There are many delicate nylon parts in VCR's, they are usually the first to break, that is one possibility. The covers come off these pretty easily but I would pick it up and shake it first to see if something is rattling around inside, if you can hear something moving around in there and if it isn't something a child pushed inside (this often happens) then it is probably toast as it is more expensive to have fixed than it is worth. One other thing that is possible is that there is buildup on the capstan or tape guide rollers which can be sticky and wrap the tape around themselves and the machine will kick the tape out. If you are at all handy you could take the cover off, (FIRST MAKING SURE IT IS UNPLUGGED), plug it back in and insert a tape. As you watch the tape you can see at which stage of the cycle the tape backs out and maybe see the problem. As you can see many problems are possible, best to get another machine.

Unplug the machine and pick it up and shake it, this will tell you if something is in there that shouldn't be or that something broke off. So many things could be wrong that it is probably not worth fixing if it is not a foreign object inside.

if no power indicator check for broken power cord, if ok at this time you will need to remove the cover of the dvd player to access the power supply.then look for blown fuse or any burnt parts here.

Some one needs to open it to see if the tape is loaded but wrapped around a post or tangled up.What usually causes this is the mechanism that moves the tape has a problem---bad or broken belt or rubber drive wheel that moves tape is bad.Its called eating tapes.With it apart you may be able to extract the tape and then insert with it apart to see if reels etc are or are not moving in RR and FF first and then in play to see what is not moving.

The problem is in the power supply, one or two capacitors fail and sometimes have a slight puff at the top, need to be replaced.
