It started with the convergence going haywire, not

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

I have a Mitsubishi 55"

This set has a convergence problem. You should only need to replace the IC. Part is STK393-110. It sits on the middle board behind the large heatsink. Use a heat transfer compound to ensure repair lasts. If you have no experience soldering (or unsoldering) please use a professional for the work. The traces are fragile and I have fixed many mistakes local DIYers have committed. Goodluck.

I have a WS-55511 TV

No you have drained the cooling liguid and now the set will not work untill it is replaced. First off there is no picture tube in these tv's, I guess your wanting to replace the bulb, or the three color tubes.

Because of the fact that the TV is a big screen, labor might be around $70-$150, depending on who you hire to perform the repairs. AND, this is also assuming that the repair does not require any replacement parts.

I would recommend that you shop around to find a repair shop that has the lowest rates (but be sure they also have a good reputation). Also ask if the shop gives free repair estimates and if they will do house calls so you won't have to lug the thing to a repair shop.

A new big screen will cost you more money than getting your broken set repaired (unless the problem with your broken set is REALLY big).

But, consider what you've gotten out of your set. If the set is certainly old (like, say 10 or so years), then it might be a good time to consider replacing rather than repairing. A bigscreen that's old enough will exhibit certain problems related to age, such as old coolant for the CRTs and the projection lenses (which can be replaced relatively inexpensively), old high voltage components such as the flyback transformer (which do fail over time from constant use since the internal windings have insultation that will break down and allow the windings to short themselves after enough hours of use), and/or old electrolytic capacitors (which were a really big problem with Mitsubishi equipment from the 1990s since they had big problems with leaking). If you are considering replacing, donate the set to any repair shop that's willing to take it in. They will either refurbish it themselves and resell it or, more likely, they will strip it for parts and dispose of what they can't use.
Otherwise, it may be best to go ahead and find someone to fix your current set. Just go to Welcome to Mitsubishi Parts and plug in your model number. I will assume you're talking about CRT RPTV since you mentioned 55" in addition to bulb(s). Anyway, I just noticed the Mits website only returned 6 items when I plugged in my WS-55511 so you will probably have to call 1-800-553-7278

I had to turn the main breaker to my house off to

You are the victim of 4 leaky capacitors on the DM assembly, that's the vertical board all the way to the left looking from the rear of the unit. Replacement of the 4 capacitors (1000mf @ 25v, 105 degree) will restore the TV. As always, at plug-in the TV will blink for up to 70 seconds during the boot-up sequence so make sure to allow for this time. Good luck!

I have a 55 inch rear projection mitsubishi tv. it

It is called Convergence. You have three CRTs. Red, blue, Green. When they are not aligned, you will see the individual colors. See if you can do some alignment in the users menu. Look for Converge or Convergence in the menu. Either under video or setup.

I have a Mitsubishi WS-55511.

Hi,
Error code 2-3 shows problem with Horizontal Deflection section, please check Q5A31 Horizontal Output Transistor, Q5A32 Horizontal Driver Transistor, Q5A01 +B Regulator and if all transistors found OK then flyback transformer would be defective.
Since tv is an old model so I do not think flyback transformer would be available any more.
Please note that above said testing/ checking should be done IF you have good electronics knowledge and prior experience of electronics stuff repair OR local tv repairman is better option to do that.
Let me know if you have additional question.
Thanks.

I have TV WS55511 and

Hi schwartd639,

Make sure that the cable wire was plug securely. Check for loose connetion, bad connection. If the symptom persist your tuner is faulty. You may replaced the board, check ebay.com or shopjimmy.com for replacement, just type the model no. on the search engine and the available parts will be display. Also, if you can look for technician to troubleshoot the board, go for it, bad solder joints on that board will caused the same symptom as what you encountered right now.

Hope I helped you.

Try calibrating your TV. Go to options or settings, then select calibration. For the picture being stretched, go select picture size and select "natural" instead.

Constant blinking green power light but doesn't turn

This is from my WS65907 service manual.

4. Self Diagnostics
The “Power ON LED” provides an indication of the sets operation, and the possible cause of a malfunction.
1. Initial Control Circuitry Check
Immediately after the TV is connected to an AC power source:
• The LED flashes three times ... indicating the Microprocessor has initialized and is functioning
properly.
• If the LED does not flash ... the Microprocessor is NOT functioning.
2. Error Code Operational Check
Pressing the front panel “INPUT” and “MENU” buttons at the same time, and holding for 5 seconds,
activates the Error Code Mode. The LED flashes denoting a two digit Error Code, or indicating no problem
has occured since the last Initalization.
Note: The front panel buttons must used, NOT those on the Remote Control.
• The number of flashes indicates the value of the MSD (tens digit) of the Error Code.
• The flashing then pauses for approximately 1/2 second.
• The LED then flashes indicating the value of the LSD (ones digit) of the Error Code.
• The Error Code is repeated a total of 5 times.
Example: For Error Code is “24”, the LED will flash 2 times, pause, and then flash 4 times.
3. Error Codes
The Error Code designations indicating a malfunction, or no malfunction, are listed below:
“12” ... indicates no error has occured.
“21” ... X-Ray Protect circuit.
“22” ... Short Protect circuit.
“23” ... Horizontal Deflection failure.
“24” ... Vertical Deflection failure.5. Circuit Adjustment Mode
Most of the adjustments can only be performed using the remote hand unit. Many of the adjustments must
be performed in both the NTSC and HD modes. Video/Color adjustments must be performed in the NTSC
and HD modes, and data must be preset in the 480P (DVD) and VGA modes.

Once the current went out

Although you may think the power outage has ruined your TV, it has not. I have repaired this model . This model by now has several bad grounds. The worst case is in your convergence board. This problem was in the process before the power outage. I do not believe you will have to purchase parts for this particular model. If you can very carefully pull out the convergence board, you will find 15 or twenty bad solder grounds on the solder side of this board. The major concern will be that the convergence IC, which is a STK-393-110 has separated pins from the board. This would be the first thing to solder. Next the jumper jack cables that connect this board to the other two boards will have bad grounds as well. You must really, really have good eyes to see the cracked rings around the pins of any and all ICs,resistors, transistors, capacitors, diodes etc. This will restore the operation of your TV. I must tell you...it will not be easy to pull this board out and replace. You may opt to see a TV tech. Show a tech this info. This will repair this TV. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support!
