Of course, you can. With a HD converter, you can do it easily and quickly.

It does in fact sound like a lamp issue with the TV, unless you are an electrician I would not recommend that you attempt the repair yourself. The good news is that it should be repairable though, but you will need to contact a local TV repair person to do it. If you think you are capable of replacing it yourself you can get the part from www.partstore.com, but again I wouldn't recommend it unless you've done this before.

if this is a VS-8087 it does not have a plasma. it has CRT's filled with glycol though. have a technician look at it. i have parts for this unit.

I don't think this is HD. i will let you know when mine comes in.

There are L and R audio outputs in the rear, so you can hook it up to a surround sound system; no optical outs.
The screen size is 80 inches - but I'm sure your friend told you that.

Convergence is usual cause of this problem. Try performing convergence adjustment with remote.
