Look inside front panel. Look under right side picture tube for oil leakage on signal board. If you see a puddle and possibly corrosion, then the tv is toast.

1997 VS-60601 has worked great

Your tv is a projection tv that uses CRT technology - the image is generated by 3 small standard tv tubes. Because of that the news aren't good: what you describe is typical of a missing synchro signal - the main processor/circuit of the tv can't synchronize the internal oscillators to the signal of the broadcasted channel. This happens only when the discriminator (the part that is supposed to detect the difference and send a correcting signal) is malfunctioning. Since this happens only at start, when the parts are cold, it means that this is caused by the aging of the parts.
The only way to fix that is to replace the aged parts - practically you would have to replace all the capacitors and a great part of the resistors, efectively rebuilding the tv. But this isn't the really bad news, this is: because the tv functions out of sync for a substantial amount of time the deflection modules - especially the horizontal one, where the high tension is generated - is subjected to high stresses so it can fail at any time. When that will happen the tv will be effectively dead and repairing it would cost you a lot - at least $500.
My advice to you: accept that this tv is on its last legs, pray that it lasts longer and in between start saving for a new one - at 13 years it has had an exceptionally long life, i doubt that any one you will buy after it will last half of that.

When i turn on the set, i get s thumping noise

I had a similar problem with my 42 in Philips LCD HDTV.

Here was the problem. My Power Supply Board had several bad capacitors. I opened my TV (warranty was expired of course) and found four bulged capacitors on the PSB. Many major electronics companies Philips/Magnavox, Sony, Panasonic, and others were sold capacitors that failed in 2-5 years instead of 10-20. The capacitors fail prematurely due to a lack of preservatives. Unfortunately, they were installed in all sorts of devices and cause a wide range of failure problems.

Here are some options for you.

1. Have it fixed by a professional $$$$$$$??????? (Is it under warranty?)

Remember, TVs CONTAIN HIGH VOLTAGE AND CAN KILL YOU! Do this at your own risk.

2. Open your TV and find PSB. (The board that the power cord plugs into) Check for faulty caps. If you find some (bulged or leaking) bad caps replace the entire board. The entire board costs around $250 right now because they are in high demand right now. They can be found online. I would definitely shop around though.

3. Remove and then replace individual faulty caps. This takes some soldering skill.

Caps are inexpensive and if you can take care of it yourself it will save you hundreds.

This may be your problem. If you determine that it might be.

I have a Tip/How TO tutorial on this site that may also help. It gives step by step instructions for replacing caps on PSB #715t2432-2. If this is your board you are in luck. Here is the Link: Fixing the Philips Turns/shuts off on its own problem. I'm working on uploading pictures to help guide people though the process as well. Let me know if I can do anything to help.

Hope this helps and if it does please rate it accordingly. Good luck.

Idealy if you contact Mitsubishi online they can issue a list of service centres that can supply a new screen. Otherwise, have a look at ebay, you may find a supplier there.
You will need to order the correct screen as it may be made up of two parts, an outer screen and an inner optical screen, depending on its production age.
Hope that helps.

Push on power button and television doesnt come on

Hi,

Some Projection TV's has a small round fuse in the back inside by the power cord. This fuse may be blown out. Before removing the back cover be safe and unplug the TV. Also if the inside is dusty take a duster and blow some of the dust out.

Please get back to us if you have any further query or else accept the solution.

Mitsubishi VS-60601 has a distorted picture with

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Broke

You may not have good luck. These sets are aging fast. But you may try your local TV shop for a used one. Or check with Andrews Electronics .com. Maybe MCM electronics. Or you may even take out an ad in the newspaper!

Mitsubishi VS60601

Hi,
Its an old model TV and I'm afraid Lamps ( 3 CRTs red-green-blue) are not available in any parts-shop.
I would recommend to buy new TV instead of spending money on its 3 lamps, if available.
Thanks.

VS-60601 Mitsubishi Problem...

That model is famous for the CRts leaking onto the chassis which causes all kinds of problems and can cause the main circuit board to short as well as destroy the solder. Try looking at the board for evidence of a pastey substance that would indicate CRT coolant leakage. Let me know what you find.
