the easiest way to mix less effect sound and more natural guitar sound is to reduce the level of the individual effects within the patch selected. The more challenging method would be to go through a splitter box 1st, or any stereo effects box, to split the signal, and then you will have 2 outputs, one dry, one through the Zoom. The 3rd (and simplest ) method would be to place the Zoom in the effects loop of an amp that features a send / return balance adjustment.

If the display is normal, and you can switch to other banks, and can edit each bank, then the problem of no sound, is at the pre-amp IC input, output amp, or CODEC converter. • Test the output socket. Touch pin output socket (right red arrow) with finger / screwdriver / whatever. If sound is heard in the amplifier, the output socket is normal.
• Test the input socket, Same as above. (left red arrow). (if this happen in this point, problem is clear).

NOTES: If lcd light are on (as you say), but appearing G1 or d5 or bt, and the system are hang / frozen, this is a different issue to the one described above,and dealt with in different ways too. Yes,the hard drive can be replace. MRS1044 use general hard drive, 3.5 inch E-IDE type, 15 GB. You can replace with bigger capacity. Don.t forget to format it within mrs1044.

not sure about the GFX-5, but with zoom you typically hold the 'store' or 'save' button down while powering up the device. Then it'll ask if you want to delete settings or some such...
