Have a 2-4 hp lawnmower where the rewind spring
When you remove the recoil shroud ( housing ), the square shaft sticking out should move freely in a counter-clockwise direction and you should hear clicks when you twist. If you don't hear the little balls clicking or the square shaft doesn't move freely counterclockwise, then that square shaft is rusted onto the end of the crankshaft and must be freed before it can be removed. This is a common problem for mowers left out in the elements. Sounds like the shaft is frozen onto the crankshaft end. Procedure: First, disconnect the spark plug. Get a magnet ready because 5 little balls are gonna come rolling out on this upcoming move. Take a 1/4

Back to basics, is the fuel in the tank good?( fill with fresh fuel ) does it have a spark at the plug?(remove the plug, earth against the cylinder, is there a spark,if not, replace the spark plug and try again ) does the plug wet with fue lafter pulling?( clean/service carb ) is the spark occuring in the correct place ( flywheel key sheard ) has the engine got good compression?

Hi karen. Your not explaining what you have done to get the mower going. All petrol mowers run with three problems. Fuel,fire and air. If you are getting all three it will either be a snapped Piston or the gaskets on the block have perished. Check eHow's website and follow the instructions. Good luck

First check the air filter isn't blocked. If it isn't the carb is at fault.

Mower is dead.
sounds like the intake valve has a problem sealing off. allowing it to fire back through the intake.
