How do i clean the carburetor?
go to auto store and buy a can of carburetor cleaner. not in spray can but a liquid that you can soak the carb. in. Take the carb off and place in a coffee can with the cleaner let it soak overnight. do not remove the set screws unless you have the proper settings to put them back as they were. Also in the bottom of the carb you will see a small pin hole clean it out with a stick pin. You can take off the bottom of the carb where the float is to clean it as well just be careful not to loose any parts. After cleaning it put it back together.
Overfill oil
Did you turn the mower on end or over? If so change the air filter otherwise It sounds like the piston rings are worn out. Rings are cheep but unless its an expensive lawnmower I would just replace it.
Overfill oil
Sounds like the engine is tired. Blue smoke is oil burning. Hard starting is oil on the spark plugs and/or low compression. This also can be due to someone adding too much oil.Sometimes, the carburetor Needle valve hangs u pa bit and the Crank case oil gets mixed with gas so now the oil level is high. Too much oil in a motor is bad too, that would cause theblue smoke too.

Hi kinipelakaha...
Sounds like you have dirt/debris in your carburetor jets, fuel passages or a diaphgram that is becoming non-flexible.
Be sure to check your fuel tank for water and dirt/debris, if there is water/debris then you need to clean your tank.
Also check you fuel line condition after a while they will degrade and need replacment.
If you do replace your fel lines be sure to draw on a piece of paper the routing of the fuel lines for later attachment to the correct connection
Make sure you are getting spark at the spark plug, to do this:
Remove your spark plug and check to be sure you are getting fire at the spark plug.
You do this by grounding the plug on the head of the engine and pulling the crank rope, if you are getting spark then:
Check/Clean/Replace your fuel filter if you have one, normally they are located in the fuel tank of weedeaters.
When you remove your fuel lines from the carburetor be sure to make a drawing to how the lines connected to the carburetor.
Normally the big line will be the line the fuel filter is connected to inside of the tank. The smaller of the two lines is the return to the fuel tank from the carburetor after it is pumped thru the carburetor by the primer bulb.
Also make sure you are using fresh fuel...and oil mix if your using a two cycle mower or weedeater with the oil to the right mixture and not too much oil as it can cause hard starting.
If the mower/weedeater is over a couple of years old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
Sounds like you will need to clean the carburetor or replace your carburetor internal rubber parts like the diaphgram and O rings.
I recommend that you use a laquer thinner type cleaner to clean and dissolve the laquer build-up in the float and needle jet passages.
Be sure to remove all plastic and rubber parts before using the laquer thinner because it can dissolve the plastic parts and render them unuseable.
Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all the fuel and air passages.
Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or using starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
Keep in mind that the float (if you have one) for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instructions you get with the carburetor kit.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.
But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.
Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.
That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their orginal position before you started.
Once you have your carburetor rebuilt that should solve your problem.

this model comes with solid wheels. If the tire is "flat" it is broken and cannot be repaired. This model shows 2 available wheels. Replace with part# 734-1988 or 734-1987 depending on whether your mower has 7" or 8" wheels
String will not pull
This could be hydraulic lock. Remove spark plug and try pulling it over. If this is the problem you will see gas or oil being discharged through the spark plug hole. If this is not the case make sure your safety brake (the little handle you have to depress on handle bar) is working properly. If so you will have to remove starter shroud and look for problems there.
I have an 22in yard machine that is hard to crank.
This is MTD's engine that they have made for them in China. It is a Honda clone. In the carb, there is a removable jet and stem that must be cleaned very well. Pull the carb. Remove the bowl. Look up from where the bowl screw mounts, you will see a brass slotted jet. Remove it. Next. from inside the carb bore, push down on the brass nozzle that extends up into the bore, it should come down thru the hole that you just removed the slotted jet from. Clean both the nozzle and the jet. Run a very fine piece of wire thru all of the holes in the nozzle. BE CAREFUL not to enlarge the holes, only get them clean. Reassemble. This is one of the more difficult carbs to get clean. Don't forget to flush and dry the fuel tank and fuel lines to remove any debris. Also, check with your local parts house to see if a replacement carb is reasonably priced. Most of the time they are pretty pricey, but sometimes I get surprised by how cheap one is.
Good luck!

There is a filter between the gas tank and the carb... pull that apart and get the dirt out...
